    DIY Localtalk - Ethernet converter

Hate to necro this thread, but this document will probably be of use: http://bitsavers.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/pdf/ibm/datacomm/GA27-3093-3_SDLC_Concepts_Jun86.pdf The reason the SCC was needed for LocalTalk is because LocalTalk uses IBM SDLC as its low-level transport protocol (hence the...

    Classilla 9.3.2

Except if you *have* enough RAM, they won't be paged out... so you're loading them unnecessarily, but I digress...

    Classilla 9.3.2

    I think he's talking about 9.3.2 being faster than 9.2.2... (a 400 MHz G3 and G4 have identical performance on non-AltiVec loads)

4 GB Of RAM In A PowerMac G4 MDD?

Its not the memory controller. OS 9 has an address space limit at either 1 or 1.5 GB (I forget which, off-hand). OS X supports larger amounts...

    Macintosh Memory Map

Yeah, durr. I had that backwards. Been a while here. I've seen some systems where the ROM was at 0, but the RAM was higher up, as well... (Apollo DN3500 comes to mind)

    IBM Startup Chime...

So, I've got an RS/6000 44P Model 170 here, with a startup chime. I'm curious as to if Dennis Nedry or dougg3 wants to help me take a stab at this. I've got a copy of the latest firmware update from IBM, but the main issue is that it seems to be an executable containing compressed firmware for...

    Macintosh Memory Map

Just a heads up, the 68k does NOT start execution at $00000000. Instead, it loads the starting address at $00000000, then jumps to the address given there. The initial stack pointer is also given at $00000004 (also known as the A7 register).

    Dhrystone for 68k Macintosh

Here's another fun result: HP Integrity rx2600, 1.3 GHz/3MB L3 Itanium2 "Madison", OpenVMS 8.4. The compiler is: IIRC it's a rebadged Intel compiler along with the C++ and FORTRAN ones. I know Pascal and COBOL are modified versions of the DEC Alpha compilers.

    Stuffit installer SMI

You are aware that 2000's AFP support DOES do forks, right? (well, as long as your share is on NTFS)

    Dhrystone for 68k Macintosh

386SLC 20 MHz. The SCSI controller performance on that thing blows just about every 68k out of the water too... it's kind of scary that it can reliably pull 3-4 MB/s.

    Dhrystone for 68k Macintosh

An IBM PS/2 Model 56 gets about 5900 it seems, under DOS 6.22 with the code built using Open Watcom. Not bad for a 20 MHz 386SX built under license by IBM with added on-die cache...

    I love LocalTalk

Too bad token ring didn't catch on too well... in the days before switched ethernet, it was a much better LAN technology. The main thing that gets me about token ring MSAUs (the equivalent of a switch/hub) is that they don't need a power supply... they're passive devices that only need power for...
