Ah, in my case it turned out to be the ROM. I tried a ROM-inator II from BMWOW and it's working now.
So now the question is: Is it possible to repair the bad ROM? How do I go about troubleshooting it? I don't see any replacement Mac IIfx ROMs available anywhere but I'm interested in restoring...

What epoxy did you use, specifically? How is it holding up now (a few days?) after the repair?
I have read that nothing can be done as this usually means the LCD panel itself is delaminated and moisture has gotten in from the edges. One thing that might help slightly (but temporarily) is baking it in the oven - but as for temperature and duration I have no idea.

I just picked up my very own Macintosh Portable. I replaced the battery and recapped the motherboard and it's worked great now - just one problem, 1MB of RAM is not very much - I can't even boot System 7.1! ... Was wondering if these ersatz memory cards are still available, I'd really like one!
