Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Very cool! I developed something similar for my Duo (separate thread over in the PowerBook forum), but although that platform has some of its own unique challenges (ID chips, current regulated charging algorithms, etc.), one critical factor made the single port charge / discharge steering easier...
Winimage: http://www.winimage.com/download.htm
Your LC will run 7.5.5, but I'd only install that if you have all 10MB of RAM installed (motherboard only has 2MB). You might be happier performance-wise with 7.1.
Windows 7 should work fine. I write Mac disk images from a Win7 PC with a USB floppy all the time. Are you using winimage? Maybe try a different image file? If you haven't already, check out https://winworldpc.com. They have a lot of Mac software packaged in PC-friendly formats. For instance...
Yes, much ink has been spilled bemoaning the Spindler era. I don't doubt that lax quality controls during his reign allowed the Duo to ship with such a glaring flaw, but much of the Apple DNA is still apparent in it's design regardless and it's really too bad that it's thusly hamstrung...
Okay, so you have both Printer and PB varieties? Would you mind posting pics of the PCBs (if they're easy to get apart anyway)? I'm very curious to know if they're indeed different (should be able to see some difference is the power regulation circuitry) or if (as I suspect) they just didn't...
Yeah, the Duo keyboard is a real head scratcher. Apple, a company historically known for sweating every minor detail and a commitment to superior build quality, really missed the mark there. Even by 90s standards they're unacceptably mushy and imprecise. There are a few threads here on improving...
While I still entertain the fantasy of someday finding time to reverse engineer the Duo's modem board and develop an internal Wifi NIC, this quick and effective, if less elegant and more cumbersome solution will have to serve for now. I got the idea from user @ants, who's done some awesome work...
My 180c looked similar when I received it a couple of months ago. Although it was a leaky NiCd vs. NiMh, it had the same blue fuzz. There's some sort of thin metal finish that's been sprayed (or ion transferred or something) onto the inner surfaces of the chassis plastic which is, I suspect...
Certainly. I purchased a lot of 10 on AliExpress and they're currently in the international shipping black hole. Once they arrive I should have enough for 2ea Duo 280c and PB 180c batteries + a few spares.
Has anyone purchased a SCSI2SD recently? Inertial shows that the PowerBook version has been out of stock for a while, and my attempts to email them or contact them via their profile here have all gone unanswered. I bought one for my Duo a few months ago, so this is a recent development.
Happy to assist if you can provide some pics of the innards and a cell count. Does it have any internal logic circuitry or just wiring? For instance, the 5xxx series has the EMM board, which makes things more complicated. What little info I have suggests the charged voltage for a 190s pack is...
I've opened a few Duo batteries and power adapters at this point, and the same technique I often use on other cemented plastic cases works well: Place on a hard surface seam up, and strike the seam quickly but gently with a soft-face or small ballpeen hammer working all the way around. The...
Looks like you can still get them new:

I'm not gonna raise my hand on the rebuild (every minute I spend on my own personal PBs is time stolen from other pressing obligations), but based on output voltage, it looks like a 190 likely...
Thanks! The above posts provide most of the bullet points, but I'll add a bill of materials. I also forgot the two most important photos!
Look Ma, no wires!
Plugged in and charging...
I recently hit my 180c with some Krud Kutter and it pulled a lot of the discoloration out. Still not a perfect match to the chassis plastics, but much better. I'd be cautious as using anything too harsh, as ABS plastic isn't at all solvent resistant and even if the plastic fares okay, you might...
With my new PB 180c distraction out of the way (because it's 100% functional!), I had a chance to get back to this project. My M1812 charger arrived and I've been able to test a lot of different scenarios. As I surmised, it's current regulated, and must see the following before engaging a charge...
Nicely done! I need to post something similar about my nearly complete 180c refurb. I can definitely sympathize with your plastic repair comments. Glad these are ABS, as it's pretty easy to work with and repair.
Very nice! Having recently gone through the no display signal / white screen song and dance, I know just how satisfying it is to finally see video output :)
