Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
I'll bet your key is in the lock position. That disables ADB devices and disallows booting to a floppy. It's designed as a security measure if the Quadra is being used as a server.
What I used to do is take a Mac that had both ethernet and Appletalk ports (I used a Quadra 700), install IPNetRouter on it, and use it as an internet gateway to all my non-ethernet Macs. Worked great.
Yeah, it's next to impossible that they're ALL bad. It's just that Appletalk usually is so simple to set up - everyone just assumes it's a hardware issue. Strange.
If you are using two port PhoneNet connectors, are you using a terminator for the unused port? Sorry for the dumb question, but this is one of those things that usually 'just work'.
I have a two button (with scroll wheel) optical Logitech mouse. Works great, and I like the feel.
But why is it that nobody can build a silent scroll wheel? Heh!
Yeah, I took my well used Extended Keyboard I from my old IIcx to college with me instead. Many of the keys on the numerical keypad were broken from the Northridge earthquake, but it still worked great, and I loved the feel.
You guys are taking the fun out of this by taking me too seriously. ;)
I'm a pre-System 7 zealot. If you guys want to run a browser, that's fine. Do it on your Quadra, or even your LC III. Run it on a MacTV if you insist on having a horrible experience. But leave the System 6 capable...
To me, putting 7.x on any machine that'll run 6.x is utter blasphemy. Old Macs are cheap. If you need to run System 7 for some unthinkable, completely unholy reason, buy a Quadra. :)
While there were some versions of the Centris 650 that had LC 040 chips (these also didn't have ethernet), most had the full 040 and ethernet. You are right about the Centris 610 though - it had the 20MHz LC 040.
When trying to pry open anything on a Powerbook, wider is better when it comes to what you use. The plastic is pretty soft and as others said it's easy to mar the case. So by going wider you're spreading the force across a larger distance - just something to think about.
There's a version of Think Pascal out there that's free. I've used it quite a bit under System 6 and it works great. Dunno how well it'll do After Dark modules though.
