COOOOOL! :b&w:
I tried the Classic ROM in Basilisk II and it complains about an unsupported ROM. I also have a Classic ROM file that has the ROM disk chopped off of it (it's just the last half of the ROM). I have not tried that one.
Is there an emulator that exists that supports the Mac Classic? It seems like one of those Macs that's in between vMac and Basilisk II. It would be awesome to run that in an emulator because it has a bootable copy of Mac OS hidden in its ROM, triggered by Apple + option + O + X at startup...
YES, I have wondered about getting OS 9 booting on a newer MDD myself. One could simply flash it with firmware from an older MDD and "see what happens"! I have one of these MDDs myself but it's still too useful to experiment on.
From what I understand, these are the differences between them...
I'm sorry to hear that transferring the 7.5 NAD resources into the 7.5.3 DT didn't work for you. Anything is worth exploring at this point.
The System 7.5 NAD's extra resources are not the same as the respective resources in the full system 7.5. So using the 7.5.3 installer on top of the...
dougg3, you amaze me - very cool project. That would be AWESOME to change the startup sound via firmware update. Maybe the next step after this is current Macs????? I smell bold disclaimers and shareware funds close by.
My god I had SUCH a hard time finding this PDF again:
http://developer.apple.com/legacy/mac/library/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-68K_Desktop/Mac_Quadra_700.pdf
This talks about the EASC and has diagrams as to how it's hooked up. Though this particular document does...
That's quite strange that your LC 475 froze - it did not freeze for me in Basilisk II, the screen turned black and the mouse cursor faded from black back up to normal, then when I clicked the mouse, the whole thing went away. It was in 256 color mode 640x480 I think. You can try the image...
That could be. I initially had the sound set to 22.254k and it played in the wrong tune when compared to BootBeep so I switched it to 22.050k and then it sounded right. You would think that both must be scaled up to 22.254k then.
I guess it depends on if the Mac scales the sound data to a set...
Well that's kinda sad to hear that those Macs aren't working with this.
I booted System 7.5.3 on the Quadra 700 and played the 16-bit sound file. It played fine and when I compared the recordings, I noticed some things:
- Sound control panel states 22.254 kHz, 8-bit sound output
- No visible...
To run this on your 630 and 475, make the following changes to the BootBeep control panel:
Change contents of 'mach' ID -4064 to 0xFFFF 0000
Open 'cdev' ID -4064 and change:
Address 0x14A from 0x000C 3550 to 0x000C 2722
Address 0x158 from 0x000B E2F0 to 0x000B D4C4
I don't know exactly what...
Apparently the Quadra 700 supports only 8-bit audio output. This is verified by garbage when I try to play a 16-bit system sound file on the Quadra. Admittedly the Quadra is running on 7.1. The sound header of the compressed startup sound clearly states that the sound is 16-bit though - and...
Here are a couple of easter egg images from other Macs. The Quadra 605, 630, LCIII, CCII all have the routine for this but apparently no image data stored.
I can't run the PowerBook 190 / 190cs ROM in Basilisk II because it's a 2MB ROM. I have this actual Mac but it's nowhere to be found...
AWESOME idea with playing the decoded sound back through the Quadra 700!
The BootBeep control panel can be easily modded to run on all Macs if you change the content of the 'mach' resource to 0xFFFF 0000. It might crash other Macs though.
I made this mod to BootBeep and now I'm using it to...
Here are the 2 decoded startup sounds for everyone's collections:

https://sites.google.com/site/benboldt/files/Quadra%20700%20Easter%20Egg.aif
22.050 kHz, 16-bit signed mono
No better recordings of either of these sounds...
I actually believe that it's perfect now. I can no longer see any differences that aren't caused by the analog connection. Both waves follow the exact same shape now. In this picture, the lighter line is an analog audio recording. Scrolling ahead and looking at lots of areas of the sound...
In type 3, I was updating delta with this:
delta += (envelope / 3);
And the correct calculation is:
delta += (envelope * 3) / 8;
This produces a perfect result for type 3 as far as I can tell. I will apply this same method to types 1 and 2 now.
In the type 3 mode step response, general shape and initial phase look great but:
- Amplitude is a tiny bit too high
- Frequency is notably too low
I'll see what I can do about tweaking that a little bit.
The small oscillations on the decoded version (black line) are from interpolation to...
