Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Well, in this case what I'm doing is extracting the ROM image that's embedded in the resource fork of the 3Dfx MacTools Control Panel, so it should be the latest that 3Dfx produced.
Also, ping me if you decide to sell one of those. Having one handy might help in debugging this.
Last night I painstakingly went through enough of my 72-pin RAM to finally find four non-EDO 32 MB SIMMs by performing a Cirque du Soleil act with the 840AV motherboard positioned connected, but not installed all the way in the case.
Fortunately, it appears to have paid off. The machine is now...
Oh funny! :)
Even better, one of those screenshots has a non-contiguous numbered list of names in it where the names are also don't appear to have a sensible sorting, which... is exactly what the STR# resource looks like when you crack open the System suitcase in ResEdit. Also lucky, that...
You're probably right. However, I have figured out what to modify in the System Suitcase to bring back the old machine specific style icon and also to change the string used to describe the machine. The only trouble is I can't figure which specific STR# resource with a value of "Macintosh" is...
Ah, then I must have been manually changing that stuff in the "About..." screen. I wonder if I can remember how to do that.
I also wonder if anyone managed to archive any classic icon repositories. Because there used to be all kinds of top-notch pixel art depictions of the clones, etc.
I can't remember when Apple stopped showing the exact model information about your computer based on its Gestalt ID in the "About this Macintosh..." dialog. I feel like my family's Power Macintosh 6100/60 actually showed up as such under 7.5, but I could be misremembering and it's possible I...
Thanks everybody for the different perspectives and comments! :)
I guess if I had to try to frame what I usually go for it's usually trying to do something like simulate the environment of the early-ish mid life of a particular machine. What I mean by that is that I like to setup my machines...
But, I won't be able to use any of my awesome Nubus cards then. 🙂
That said, I run Linux as my primary work OS on both my desktop and laptop, and I have a whole 90's esoteria stack in my home office museum: AU/X, NeXTSTEP, IRIX, Solaris, HP/UX, and the odd man out... BeOS.
:) I had to acetone "weld" almost all those little tabs that hold the front panel on one side. Those brittle little bastards snapped during shipping from Japan.
I'm hesitant to so much as move the thing. All these Quadra 800 style cases are the worst when it comes to durability, and it doesn't...
The machine has 64 MB RAM it looks like. It turns out I don't think I have any 32 MB SIMMs, only 64 MB ones. Before I pop the motherboard and replace the SIMMs in vein, does anyone know if the Quadra 840AV will take 64 MB SIMMs to top out the memory at 256 MB?
The usual suspects about old Mac...
Yeah, I expect it works with my PowerTower Pro, but probably needs to get the NVRAM fix loaded in there, and given how every other one of those that I know of works (i.e. usually from some INIT or some installer script that gets it in place), I suspect it's not getting setup correctly in OS 9.1...
Interesting, your card is different than mine. I have the "Image Processing Accelerator". It was "New in Box", and I just pulled it out today to put it on my SuperMac Thunder/24. There are two much larger footprint DSP chips on mine and a 64 MHz clock crystal.
I guess the "GX" daughtercard...
I'm testing it in my PowerTower Pro. I tried it in both one of the first three and the second three slots, not difference from what I could tell.
The Read Me for the Thunder3D does specifically note that the card isn't compatible with Catalyst-based machines like my PowerCenter or PowerCenter...
I do indeed. Though just to be clear it's only the 'plus' versions of the K6 CPUs with the Enhanced 3DNow! and PowerNow! stuff that I've never gotten working in an OPC 620, and the K6-III+ did get to POST the one time on the 660.
I'll throw a Pentium MMX 233 in there and see what happens.
Since I have most of my stuff out for shuffling around and testing, I decided to have a go at trying to use my Thunder3D. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to work or at least it's not putting out any video.
I located the Radius Thunder3D installer and installed the software, which is just 3...
Welp, I've already got 7.6.1 install images on my "Bootstrap" Jaz disk, so maybe I'll start there and see how it goes getting it all up and running tonight.
Interesting. Well I'm running 9.1 currently on that machine. According to the Orange Micro manual for the devices it looks like 8.1 or newer was the recommendation. Maybe the issue is actually that 9.1 is too new? Though I can get both of my 620 cards to work fine with all my non-'plus' AMD K6-2...
Oh, I also thought maybe the issue was that my PowerTower Pro suddenly wasn't able to feed the card enough power via the PCI slot anymore, so I removed the G4 CPU card, put in a G3 CPU card, and pulled all the PCI cards except the ATTO card that the boot drive is connected to and the Formac...
