    Mac Plus with no sound!

Replace the axial capacitors on the logic board. If that doesn't solve the sound problem, then the sound chip is probably gone and you're looking for a replacement logic board. It can be the headphones jack too but I haven't seen them gone bad often. If you don't see any abvious corrosion on...

    Flyback for Color Classic

I don't know any other boards with the same Flyback. My collection is limited to 68K Macs, I only have 1x M1212 color monitor and that's it. Finding a color classic Analog board for sale isn't going to happen soon. Anyone with ideas ?

    Flyback for Color Classic

I'm looking for a flyback for my Mac Color Classic. As with all Flybacks from Compact Macs, it's impossible to find xx( Does anyone know a source when they still have old stock or so from these ? Mine is from MTI, anyone tested a flyback from another model/manufacturer ?

    powerbook 540 tunnel vision

It's a well known problem with early active matrix LCD's. You need a lot of luck to find good B&W active matrix screen without fading. The fading of the corners will get worse the longer the powerbook is powered on. As far as I know the fading issue is only with B&W active matrix...

    PowerBook 190CS OS oddities

You need the disk tools floppy from OS8 to boot the PB 190. From there you can install OS 7.5.3 from an external CDRom for example. This one contains the powerbook 190 enabler required to boot the machine. A boot disk with os 7.5.3 and manually add the PB190 enabler will work too.

Classic II: "This startup disk will not work..."

Have you recapped the Analog and logic board of your Classic II ? I have seen this kind of trouble due to failing capacitors: the voltage swings or is too low and causes the logic board and floppy drive to malfunction and so causing all sorts of weird errors. The capacitors on the Classic I/II...

Interchangeability of Classic I And Classic II CRTs

The tube is identical and can be used on all Compact Macs. However the coil of the Yoke has to be identical: just swap the complete Yoke Coil with the connector and you're good. Definately not swap the connector only. It's an easy and straight forward job. Carefull not to overtighten then...

    400k Sony external drive problems.

It's not a good idea to try these drives without the inject mechanism as they are very sensitive. The floppy disc has to be aligned 100% correctly, otherwise the drive won't work. Soaking the assembly in WD40 alone is not enough: it's good to loosen it up again and remove all the old grease but...

Mac Classic giving me an unexpected checkerboard.

As I wrote earlier, there's probably a short circuit on the logic board, probably near the replaced capacitors. If not, then the logic board is beyond repair. Long term undervoltage can cause other components to fail.

My PowerBook 145 is dying… anything to save her?

The SMD capacitors in the LCD panel are definately bad and leaking but from what I can see, the LCD panel is probably beyond repair as the video circuit of the lower part of the LCD isn't working anymore. Probably the IC's in the LCD panel are faulty because the capacitors have failed. I have...

    Non-Backlit Portable fuse?

The fuse is located just above the 4pin battery jack. It's a 4A picofuse soldered directly to the PCB.

Mac Classic giving me an unexpected checkerboard.

Measure your voltages directly on the PCB of the Analog board after recapping, the measurement at the external floppy drive connector isn't always reliable. I see the picture is distorted: this is normal as you have to adjust brightness, contrast, V-size, H-size, V-centering, H-centering, focus...

Mac Classic giving me an unexpected checkerboard.

Did you crack up the voltage as I suggested ? Gently turn the screw clockwise while you are measuring the +5 Volts line. If you are unable to get +5V and +12V volts then you need to recap the Analog board first.

Mac Classic giving me an unexpected checkerboard.

The +5v and +12v are really way too low for a successfull boot. These numbers show your Analog board needs recapping asap: the capacitors are definately degraded, probably most of them have already failed. Try disconnecting the power of the HDD to reduce the load. While it's not a solution in...

Mac Classic giving me an unexpected checkerboard.

Have you recapped the Analog board as well ? The capacitors used on the Analog boards of the Classic I and II are from poorer quality than those of earlier Macs. They tend to leak at the bottom. What are the voltages of the +5, +12 and -12v lines ? I would test all the SMD capacitors on the...

    Quick question about AC Adaptor

Definately NOT replace the old NiCad batteries with Li-Ion one's. The charging circuitry is not designed for this. You can recell the battery pack with AA Nimh cells youself or one can easily buy a replacement battery pack on Ebay as well.

Recapping Analog Boards of 128K/Plus and SE series

I do replace them when I the outside shows cracks. In case for the Mac Plus Analog board: the Kemet AC filter/surpression capacitors of 4700pf and 470nf definately need to be replaced as on all my 8 Analog boards their box was severaly cracked. I agree not to replace them as long as they are...

    SE/30 mode32

Although the capacitors can still look good on the outside, as for the logic board they are all dead. An ESR tester will show this without a doubt. For the long term, it's advisable to recap the Analog board and more important the PSU as well since these capacitors are degraded too and as old...

Mac Classic giving me an unexpected checkerboard.

I'm afraid it's recapping time for your Classic, both the logic board and analog board. The capacitors on the logic board will definately all be dead ( high or infinite ESR reading ). As for the Analog board: when I did mine a few months ago, I noticed there were several capacitors leaking at...

    Quick question about AC Adaptor

Any powerbook 100 adapter rated at 2 Amps will work fine. Basically you have the 2 Amp adapter for the B&W models and the 3 Amp for the 165c and 180c.
