Finally.... MISSION COMPLETED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got a 80GB 5400RPM HDD today to replace the problematic 10GB HDD in the iBook. After spending all afternoon taking the HDD out and putting the new one in, I'm proud to report that the machine is up and running like a charm! :) Hasn't...
I was afraid of that. What I don't understand is why it doesn't seem to experience problems until I install the 10.4.11 update, it normally installed 10.4 just fine from the DVD (except for the last time I installed it after zeroing out the HDD, it gave me a different kernel panic and popped up...
OK: Update.
I tried resetting the PRAM. Nothing. Wouldn't boot in safe mode either.
I booted from Verbose mode. I got the following (it hangs here):
ATIRage128: Using AGP
AirportFirmware: start Sta f/w download
disk0s2: I/O Error.
Workaround Bonjour: Unknown error: 0
disk0s2: I/O Error...
@FlyingToaster, After I got the kernel panic I tried the Apple Hardware Test CD for the iBook. I did the long version, which took about 15 minutes and it stated that everything passed (including RAM).
OK: Update & More problems.
So as you may remember in my conquest thread, I obtained another iBook to be a donor unit to get this iBook back working. I ended up taking the DVD Drive, RAM, Airport and HDD out of the other iBook and installing it in the 500MHz iBook to see if I could get it...
Well, I swore I'd never buy another one of these. Saw a listing on eBay, it was cheap enough so I took the plunge. The listing was very vague, just said Dual USB iBook G3 & 384 MB RAM. Turns out I got a pretty good deal.
Ended up getting a iBook G3 600 MHz/ 384MB RAM/ 10GB HDD...
I have a E. '08 Black MacBook and it's been doing very good, even better since I finally upgraded it to Snow Leopard. Over the years I've only seen very few of them around, so I feel very glad that I decided to buy it rather than the late 2008 unibody MacBook when I had the opportunity. My only...
Very cool! When I was in school, we still had a few G4 sawtooth's floating around with OS 9 being used as video editing machines for my multimedia class. They did OK for basic needs, but they didn't have much hard drive space (then again, none of the macs did because nobody knew how to delete...
Like said, I'm just now starting to explore working on computers and what-not so I'm not perfect at this stuff. Thats one of the main reasons I bought this iBook to begin with. I guess the biggest problem I have is that I don't have access to a lot of spare parts.
I'm going to see about...
I hate to hijack this thread, but does anyone know a good way of cleaning these (internally)? I'm pretty sure mine has a good dust build up somewhere around the fan, its making a humming noise. I mean, its not crazy loud, but loud enough that it does get distracting sometimes if there isn't...
Update:
Well, I finally dug it out of the closet. I decided I was going to tear the sucker apart to see how hard it would be to replace the hard drive if necessary. Pulled up ifixit, removed hundreds of screws... and just to my surprise, two of the screws connecting the top case are stripped...
That might be the reason my fan is noisy. I mean its not real loud but you can hear it revolving. I've only had this iMac for a few months and I haven't done anything except open up the user accessible slot on the bottom to install an airport card. The only thing I know is if you do open it all...
Here's my $0.02, hope it can help you out.
I've recently acquired an iMac G4 (17", 1GHz, 512MB RAM, 80 GB HDD, 10.4.11). I use it as my secondary computer, since my desktop PC is on its last legs. For what I've used it for, the machine does alright. I've surfed facebook, browsed forums/ web...
Thanks everyone for the tips. Sounds like age hasn't been too kind to the iMac G3s. Based on what I read, (and due to the fact that I'll need a more reliable second machine) I went ahead and got a nice iMac G4 which I'll post in the conquests when I get around to it. ;)
I hate to hear that...
Thanks for all the input. I still haven't bought one yet. I think I decided against ebay and I'm just waiting to see what appears locally. I've always found the G3's to be neat but it sounds like they are starting to become a lot of work. But then again, if its something you enjoy, then its not...
Definitely a MDD if possible.
Back in school, when I was head of our video broadcasting team, we had a wide range of Macs that we allowed the students to use to put together news stories, edit footage, etc. (using iMovie). Even had a 400MHz G4 tower (running OS 9), but that got taken out early...
So after nearly a year, I'm reconsidering working on this iBook again. I just wanted to see if there were any second opinions about whats wrong with it.
For a flashback, this machine is pretty much unusable due to system errors that keep occurring (aka The Bomb). We're running OS 9.2.2 which...
Thanks for the advice, everyone. Not necessarily looking for a free hand out, just wanting to get some general advice on what I should look for.
I think for the moment I'm going to continue to browse around and look at options (also see if some come up for sale locally.. theres a few for sale...
For a little time now I've looked at buying an iMac G3.
I've searched locally and haven't been too conclusive with finding what I want (or much less, reasonably priced) so I'm thinking about resorting to probably picking one up off of ebay. Does anyone have any tips on buying one off of ebay...
