Good luck with the hinge repair. Hope it works well for you.
My 170 seems to have been one of those stored in a basement for the past 20+ years. You win some you lose some. Before tv begins it’s quite awesome to use.
It seems to be quite rare to see an unaffected PB170 so it’s good to make sure it’s the same brand because it would be a pretty big discovery if they found a non Hosiden screen.
I wonder if maybe they used better materials possibly on the portables and that’s why they are less affected...
I agree. It will never be 1:1 but hopefully we can find a way to get a close enough panel. I do like the retro feel of the old panel for sure d would miss that but it wouldnt be a hard decision for me at all. Tv versus no tv and I would chose the no tv all day as long as it fits and works.
I agree with that there is definitely an element of keeping originality. The displays would be nice for those people who don’t mind sacrificing a damaged or broken panel for a new one.
Even as a replacement for broken or missing displays it would have a purpose.
There are solid state adapters...
I did test it with a thermometer and it did vary by about 10-15 degrees F. So that wasn’t ideal and may have caused the problems. I don’t have a gas oven unfortunately.
I’m with you on the possibility that it is resealing the panel. If it truly was moisture after the amount of time I had baked...
That's interesting. Hopefully the rest will heal themselves. The tunnelling has decreased significantly compared to originally so I would be reasonably happy overall if they healed.
Well It’s been some time since I last baked my display and since then, almost all of the pixel rot has disappeared. Not sure why but there is only a handful left compared the larger number of original spots.
I don't think I posted this before but this was the initial tunnel vision effect for reference if anyone wants to know.
took about 30 minutes to fully tunnel all the way in.
Oh awesome, I didn't realise one already existed! That should be helpful for future.
Hopefully you can get your 170 repaired successfully. Mine took quite a bit of fiddling to get it in the right spot but that might have just been my printer not printing the best.
Im thinking I may compile a document of current methods and when they should or shouldn't be used to help people avoid my situation. May allow us to be a bit more organised as well compared to searching all over the place for old threads.
You should be able to find the 3d printed parts on eBay...
I see the quality trade off and recapping isn’t too much of an issue. Maybe I will try for another 170 if I can get one cheap for parts. Hopefully it doesn’t have TV or if it does, hopefully it is fixable.
It sucks but I did know it had a chance of doing this when I bought it. Maybe I will replace the screen or buy a passive matrix model so I have a working PowerBook.
They are still there unfortunately. Not changing so far. There isn’t very many but it’s enough to distract you if you are trying to do anything.
With time, the tunnel vision is creeping closer to the center but still not as bad
It’s been on for about 10 minutes and so far the tunneling is much much better. About an inch in on the right and about half that on the other sides
Side note, do you know if pixel rot worsens with time or stays constant?
