This may not be relevant, but I have swapped the CPU cards on my 170/145B/140 all around and they have all worked with each others CPU cards and RAM. I have been running the 145B with a 170 CPU card for almost a year at this point without issue. I don't remember anything like that indicating a...
I have just been using good old floppies for most of my file transfer. the bigger files get loaded onto an emulator and copied to my external BlueSCSI image for my Color Classic. The PowerBooks have to use serial form the CC for large files. It certainly isn’t ideal, but is the only way I have...
No problem. I really need to get one of those bench power supplies if I keep getting more computers. I would love WiFi on my PowerBooks but I already have the original BlueSCSI in the two laptops I use most (145B and 280). Maybe I will pick one up for my newly acquired 540c since it has a...
The paint was something from my local hardware store, I don't know off the top of my head but I can try to get the name/brand for you. I'm working on getting the silk screened text sorted out. I got the measurements from another member of the forums and I am looking at either stickers or rub-on.
I was able to buy a modern generic one off of eBay. It was labelled as working on this series of laptops and it was 7.5v 2a. Worked well with my 140/145B/170 for several months and I only stopped using it once I recapped my original power supply.
Someone was working on a lithium solution, but...
I believe its this one. It is very close to caps and given that the grounding did not fix it, the caps nearby are certainly bad. Yours looks fine in terms of solder joints, so I wouldn't expect that the chip is bad.
That may be related to caps, but it also may be related to grounding. the metal shield in the chassis needs to be properly contacting the grounding pieces on the logic board. The photo attached shows the grounding pieces on the motherboard. On the bottom of the board where these stick out, they...
Your machine looks quite nice. Glad it works. You definitely need to recap the motherboard still though. Looks like at least for now the analog board works, but in future that needs to be recapped as well. For the logic board, tantalum capacitors are the most reliable, but the analog board needs...
Analog board is difficult and dangerous to get to if you have never done it before. Many high voltages that can badly shock you. Logic board isn't too difficult but requires a little practice to get right and some patience. If you plan to do it yourself, make sure to have a temperature...
That sounds like you may have a problem with the analog board as well. They have tons of capacitors all over that can (and likely have) gone bad over time.
replace the logic board caps first and then go from there.
Speaking from experience, these machines do not need working PRAM batteries. I have been running mine since I got it several months ago with no battery installed.
Did anything else ever come of this? This seems worth doing to me even if it cuts off around 50% voltage. Currently I'm using a 2100mAh pack I rebuilt a few months ago, but a capacity increase would be great, especially if I can use higher mAh cells.
I must have been super lucky. I didn’t know that with my 280 or 230 and ran both for maybe an hour each while testing. I have recapped both but haven’t used the 240 more than maybe a few minutes since. I used the 280 for dozens of hours since and it is still going strong.
The capacitor is in a...
