    New Resident - ANS 700

It's really just an IBM RS/6000 with an Apple sticker on, you know :p There's not hing wrong with that however, RS/6000s are really top-class UNIX machines. I don't get on that well with AIX but if it annoys you too much I daresay most versions of PPC Linux would run on it too.

The "I might need to change mine" Thread

I was gonna make some crass diaper joke, but I couldn't think of one ;) I've done NetBSD on a SE/30, Mystic Colour Classic, Q605 and a IIci. I've never tried Linux as it seems to be much the same but less well documented and supported for the most part.

    PowerMacintosh ONE/225

The company in question is Xemplar - this started as a co-operatinve Education program between Apple and Acorn, but when Acorn went bust (around 1998) it was re-absorbed by Apple as it's Education branch in the UK. My dad used to use Xemplar when he worked in Education, but mostly for Acorn...

    time to fess up

Sorry to sound like an old man, but this is the reason I never dick about with stuff like this on modern boards - they are extremely fragile and sensitive to heat. Thin traces, multilayer boards, and a hot iron tend to end in disaster if you even slip a little or leave the iron on slightly too...

Is using an external fan needed with a Mac Plus?

I pulled a current off the pins on the external floppy drive port on my Plus and wired it up using a D-connector to 2 486-era heat sink fans that I wired on over the sloping vents either side of the handle. It works well enough - the one on the analogue board side really throws out a lot of heat...

    Pair of PowerPC upgrades

I read '540' and thought he said LC540 (which doesn't actually exist) - sorry [:D] ]'> Hey IT WAS LATE okay? That's hardly the issue - I'm sure he wanted them for the rarity and coolness factor of owning 2 rare Mac upgrade cards. I didn't even know such a thing existed for 68k laptops.

    myopic mini

She didn't just update to 10.4.11 by any chance did she? It's been showing this kind of behavior disturbingly commonly on a wide range of PPC and Intel Macs [:(] ]'> Is the restart loop occurring after a Kernel Panic or is it just looping at the startup (bong to white screen). If it's the...

What colour do I paint it?

Matt Black, and pick out the Apple logo. and frame the lettering in a little beige panel. Either that or pure white, about 6 coats then 4 coats of clear coat.

    What's a 15" iMac G4 worth?

I looked at the value of mine on fleabay and decided that, as I bought mine new, it was worth more to me as an alarm clock and music player and sexy early 21st century design icon than it was to someone else.

    cubism

I found this with no less than 1 search on Google :p Bypassing Open Firmware Security If you forget the Open Firmware password for a computer, or if someone else sets one before you do, you can reset the Open Firmware settings to their defaults (no password and the none security mode). If...

Project: getting Leopard running on a G4-upgraded Beige G3..

In a word, No. I think you need to stop thinking about it and try something! It's basically gonna be a case of 'try one, see what crashes' until you get the Installer to run. I think that's probably how Ryan worked it out for XPF. Good ole' experimental investigation [:D] ]'> You likely...

    External firewire -- compatibility?

I have 3 enclosures - a 2.5" Oxford911 based one, a Initio-based hard disk case and a 5.25" DVD-RW case with a Prolific chipset. All boot fine. I think you may find only early Prolific chipsets, and maybe older Macs, have that kind of issue - later ones (i.e. from the last 2-3 years) don't...

Project: getting Leopard running on a G4-upgraded Beige G3..

Has anyone got any ideas what you would need to get a Blue & White working? The install image for Lepard craps out right at the kernel boot stage on the B&W I have claiming there's no driver for the machine (a fair point as there likely isn't!). I'd dearly love to get the B&W running...

    IRC Behavioural Issues.

I concur. I only check IRC channels a couple of times a night typically, when i've got 5 mins and I'm idling, or of my notify makes a noise. The same is true of any IRC channel - the more you hang around there the more you end up talking crap. It can be amusing if you are all grown up about it...

    IRC Behavioural Issues.

I'm with Cory and Unknown_K all the way here. People need to set down the rules in stone and enforce them evenly and fairly. It's how the channels I have modded on, and the best ones I just hang around in, are run, and it works well. General rules I've worked under before are: - Treat others...

    IRC Behavioural Issues.

I've joined and quit the 68kmla IRC channel twice now (I left last a couple of years back) because of exactly this purile and stupid behaviour, a good dose of which found it';s way to me. My rules are simple - the Internet is my social life, so if it's not fun or people are pissing me off that's...

    Green background on monitor

In my experience using Radius Thunder cards and SuperMac cards they actively use Sync-on-Green. In fact the Thunder cards only support 2 resolutions out of the 20-odd they provide in Separate Sync mode. Off the top of my head they are 1024x768 and 640x480, I think.

    Green background on monitor

if it's definitely only the background and has perfectly white windows and menus then it's got me stumped. However, E-Machines were a branch of Radius and I know practically all Radius and Supermac NuBus video cards use SoG.
