System 7.6 on PowerMac G4 Sawtooth

Is it me or is this thread going around in circles? Someone suggested it might be possible after some hacking, or using an upgrade card in an oder machine. I was just postulating on how a G3 would behave in such a circumstance...

RAM install in a Quadra 650

The whole case sucks, while you are in there beware of the numerous sharp edges and places where you can skin your knuckles or trap your fingers. Definitely NOT one of Apple's finer design moments!

System 7.6 on PowerMac G4 Sawtooth

I seem to remember from reading the stuff on the net that using Rhapsody DR2 on a G3 works but without the extensions and caches, effectively rendering it a very expensive 603. Wouldn't booting a G3 into 7.6.1 do the same (without the appropriate control panel)?

What unix for a dual 604e 200MHz in an 8600?

Surely you can drop into the OpenFirmware and boot it using manual 'boot ' prompt...? EDIT: It appears not, because the OpenFirmware is broken. That's kinda stupid... NetBSD doesn't *yet*, it will do with 5.0 apparently, which is due later this year. I think most popular PPC Linux distros...

    ATTO SCSI Card and Jaguar

SCSI support in OS X truly sucks. I've never got it anything other than the internal SCSI on a PowerMac (and at times that's fought back) working. I bought (at no insignificant cost) an ACARD SCSI card for my B&W that is supposedly OS X certified. it works but doesn't boot OS X (boots OS 9...

What unix for a dual 604e 200MHz in an 8600?

First and most invaluable piece of advice is: Linux != UNIX NetBSD is heavy going if you are new to Open Source OSs, there's a lot of terminal hacking and guff that sometimes is poorly explained (I have been fighting it for the last week and I'm only just winning here, but then I am using it...

    Who Wrote System 1.0?

You could probably work out who it's contributors were form reading through the various accounts at: http://www.folklore.org I don't know how many people worked on the OS side of the Mac, probably 10 at most...

    Newton Keyboard (and a picture)

The reason they never incorporated ADB was it hammers a fairly reasonable current down the wire to power the devices (like USB) and it'd have drained the battery in fairly short order. This is also why the ADB ports on Macs are thermally fused, if the wire drops out while the machine is running...

    Apple Remotes

Sony remotes work with Apple remote control IR on the Performas (I used my MD deck remote on mine when I have it in the 630). I assume therefore Apple's remotes work on Sony stereo hi-fi stuff too. Might be fun to try it.

    Sega Dreamcast

Yeh, Dreamcast with 1 controller, 1 visual memory card (weird things, those), 1 rumble pack and 5 games. Guy I know had it and didn't use it so I asked him how much he'd sell it for. He said 'oh you can have it'. All seems to work fine, apart from occasionally the RF signal to the TV will...

Apple switching back to PowerPC CPUs

The key in this argument is P.A. Semi make industry leading low-power chips, and also founder Dan Dobberpuhl was a designer on the StrongARM project which, among many other things, produced the CPU for the Newton. Apple use ARM in all their portable devices currently and also by that virtue have...

    Dell Optiplex GX1

Ahh right, noted, and I said it was a widespread problem, not 100% coverage ;)

    Dell Optiplex GX1

Be wary of the Optiplex GX2x0 series, I believe I was told they were the ones that have a known widespread issue with blowing caps a-la SE/30-itis. Same problem, the caps were too low quality/spec for the job.

Got some apple design powered speakers

No, they are the Original AppleDesign beige speakers, circa early-mid 90s? Most people mistake them for generic PC speakers, but they are far from it. I have a pair that I hacked a standard barrel connector in and used a generic 15V 1.5A PSu I had lying around. They are REALLY nice speakers...

    What's NeXT for Me?

That would make it a 'Slab' as opposed to a 'Cube' then :) Did it come with Keyboard/Mouse too? If not, it'll be a bit of a pain to find them if it didn't and its not an ADB model... Does it have any other names on it, like 'turbo'?

    What's NeXT for Me?

That stuff is so hard to find in the UK I've resorted to running NeXTSTEP on a Sun SPARCstation 20 instead. It has it's perks (like 24-bit video and 448MB of RAM, oh an a 85MHz RISC CPU) but I guess it's not quite the same...
