    IBM NetVista 8307-M3U Pentium IV

Oh the agony. I can't imagine how slow a P4 must be on a 400FSB and PC133 RAM. I be the system bandwidth chart looks like an hourglass around that RAM controller [:O] ]'> Still, at zero samolians, I guess it's not to be sniffed at, congrats [:)] ]'>

    Quick Question: iMac G3 CD-ROM

In short, yes they are. All the drives in IDE Macs are just bog standard IDE hard drives and ATAPI CD/DVD drives they work in 99.9% of other IDE machines. They are made to order by OEM suppliers with Apple ROM tags on them on some older drives but I think they've even stopped doing that now...

    Hard Drive Compatibility

If it were up to me I'd use CF cards, they are more standard, faster in some cases, and come in larger sizes. CF is actually ATA based, so adapters from CF to IDE cost next to nothing. you cna even get them made up to fit straight to a laptop 44-pin (female) IDE header. That dohicky will likely...

    Hee-hee, no X for you!

I ran OS X 10.1 on a 604e/200 with 64MB of RAM. Talk about waiting on a miracle happening. It took about 4 hours to install, about 20 mins to boot... but once you got to the desktop it was steady but not all that bad, surprisingly. As long as you only ran 1 app at a time it was fine, and from...

QT Freezing MDD When Booting 9.2.2

Using the same System Folder to boot Classic and true OS 9 is not recommended, as Classic alters the System files in OS 9 to allow it o interact via OS X, rather than independently. For example, such things as the TCP/IP settings are locked down by OS X, so that if you boot the OS 9 partition...

    The IDIOCY of some people...

I guess it's all a question of perceived value. People like that see no value on old computer hardware, which is a shame because if it works it's worth something to someone. Charities, collectors, geeks, all want old stuff. It can be used for all sorts. Anything to create a spectacle on YouTube eh?

    The IDIOCY of some people...

That's fine in your hobbyist bedroom, but when you get paid to do a job and you are on schedule you have no choice, that's when people make really big mistakes. The boss is on your back, the clock is ticking and something isn't working... Been there myself, but thankfully not with anything high...

    The IDIOCY of some people...

Well this idiot has done that more times that you've had hot dinners and I've never *once* been got by one. Moreover, on some models the only way you can adjust the pots o n the analogue board that control the screen dimensions is by... yes, taking the lid of and running it up topless! It's no...

    ANS nooting

I guess that's long enough to wait :) A serial terminal probably won't reveal any more than the screen I think. My guess is, if nothing is displaying on the screen at all, that the POST is failing. If you can't get an IBM diagnostic code from it to work out what it's failing on then I can't...

    ANS nooting

My guess is either you haven't had enough patience or you have a problem with the boot process somewhere. ANS is basically an Apple badged IBM RS/6000 server. I know from using my own RS/6000 (and techfury90 will concur here I'm sure) that they take a long time (mine takes upwards of 5 minutes...

    G4 533MHz ZIF - $20

I find that hard to believe personally, given that anytime I've over-clocked anything it's crashed under some sort of heavy load as a result, and disk access or network access is a prime cuplrit as that puts a lot of traffic across the CPU. If it was true then my B&W running a stock G4/500...

    Sort-of-a-Conquest: ThinkPads, Mobility, UNIX Iron.

If I had a huge soundproof garage and 3-phase mains and a lot of money I'd have a pretty swell data center by now ;) I'd also probably have a Superbike racing team, but that;s another story entirely ;)

    Trying to fix a G5

Interesting, I think the high operating temperatures and high stresses involved in the G5 PowerMac, coupled with the general downwards trend in the quality of electronics goods, has probably done for them, especially the Rev. 1 machines.

    Hello Again

I quite often contribute to other people's discussions about moderns stuff, because I've got knowledge I feel this place can help me share. I rarely start one of my own threads on moderns hardware though. The thing that gets me most about the way the forum has evolved is the 'Conquests' forum...

    G4 533MHz ZIF - $20

My B&W is already running a G4/500, it's been patched. I was testing the 400 to post on to a friend with another B&W.

    G4 533MHz ZIF - $20

Just thought I'd let you know, the G4/400 (7400) I bought from IC-China is pretty well confirmed DOA. I tried it in the ZIF card and it didn't work but assumed it was the ZIF card being fussy. I tried it in the B&W today prior to donating it to a friend and it wouldn't boot in that either. I...

What unix for a dual 604e 200MHz in an 8600?

IIR that was one of the things that made YLD so popular, it works on pretty-much any PowerPC Mac.

    Hello Again

Hey TBird! Long time no ski! Yeah this place has changed a lot, I came back only about 6 months ago and I couldn't really believe it either. Some of the crap people post about... Anyhoo, enough whining, welcome back :)

What unix for a dual 604e 200MHz in an 8600?

A friend of mine tried YellowDog once an concluded 'there's a good reason why it has 'Dog' in the name!' I suspect he was using an older version though, and it wasn't on a Mac. If Linux from a modern distribution like Ubuntu, Debian, SuSE, Fedora et al is no feasible (or at least easy) on a...
