iMac G4/800 15" - White Screen at Boot

No progress yet in troubleshooting but I have ordered a Mini-VGA adapter, hopefully that helps. Searching around it seems like a lot of people fix this issue with a new hard drive - I have a new old stock 120GB IDE drive coming tuesday that was going to be for another machine but I think it'll...

iMac G4/800 15" - White Screen at Boot

Video cable is connected just fine, have reseated it several times. Video doesn't change when the cable is wiggled. Have already replaced the PRAM battery with a known good one, no change.

iMac G4/800 15" - White Screen at Boot

I happened across a very reasonably priced iMac G4 today and decided I just couldn't turn it down. It's a 15" 800MHz model, one that can actually run OS9, which I find very appealing. The machine is very clean outside and only had minimal dust inside. The owner didn't know anything about it and...

    G4 Gigabit Ethernet Bodge Diodes?

Was poking around with my GigE G4 earlier today and I happened to notice something interesting on the voltage regulator near the ADC power connector, VR1500. It looks like two diodes in series, soldered back to back, on pins two and three. Anyone see this before?

    Cube G4/450!

Aha, I had assumed it was the same as the one I got a while ago - unfortunately it looks like the seller is no longer selling those. Either way, I'll be sticking with an externally powered monitor so as to keep as much load off the PSU as possible.

    Cube G4/450!

Oh wow that's very interesting, good to know. I'm not a huge fan of convection-only designs - we had an iMac G3/700 and man it got smoking hot, I was always surprised that the plastic didn't warp. I don't have any problem with a fan running all the time, I can always throw a little...

    Cube G4/450!

Good to know. I have one of those 7500s in my Beige G3 and I love it, for the DVI output mostly. This cube is just going to be running 9.2.2 so the odds of me installing X are pretty low, so the 128 Pro will be sufficient. I might install an SSD instead of HDD to help with heat.  Could you give...

    Cube G4/450!

Not too surprising.. the HDD is in very bad shape.

    Cube G4/450!

Generally speaking I don't mind paying extra for one, as cables tend to be fairly cheap. One big issue at our local thrift stores is that things don't necessarily get processed in the order in which they arrive - so the PSU may have been put out months ago, or it may go out in a week, or maybe...

    Cube G4/450!

Was out of town for work yesterday and on my way home I decided to stop into a local thrift store to have a poke around, and what do you do know, there was a cube sitting all alone on a shelf! It had a sticker saying it was untested and had no cables, and a search of the adjacent cable bins for...

Radeon 7000 PCI - is this one mac compatible?

Sorry to be so late to responding to this - but I did eventually resolve the issue. Found a 64kB mac ROM, flashed it over, and it works great in OSX. To get it to work in OS9, it really needs 9.2.2 and the 2005 ATI update. Works great in my B&W and Beige G3. Found another VGA-only Radeon...

Radeon 7000 PCI - is this one mac compatible?

I picked up this PCI Radeon 7000 on ebay this past week for my B&W and so far it's not working in my B&W or QS. https://www.ebay.com/itm/122883099623  Seller has it listed as G4/G5 compatible. This is how it shows up in ASP in 9.2.2 on the QS. ASP in OSX shows pretty much the same...

The $10 Beige G3 Minitower to close out the year.

Yeah, I definitely remember having to reseat cards and RAM in the past. I know some Beiges have problems booting with a dead/low PRAM, so replacing that may have helped as well. It also sat in storage for close to a decade according to the owner, so it's likely that it just took a while to get...

The $10 Beige G3 Minitower to close out the year.

Well, I have a few other PCs and monitors that could use new feets, and as much as I like Lowes' selection, their prices aren't great. Same with HD. The amazon price/foot is pretty good, and the no-rush shipping gets me credit toward other goodies, so I'm cool with that.

The $10 Beige G3 Minitower to close out the year.

Well, I need to get new feet first. I think the ones I have aren't quite tall enough. Looks like about 1/4" would be appropriate. These look pretty good: https://www.amazon.com/Rubber-Adhesive-Bumper-Square-Bumpers/dp/B01M8I6YLH/

The $10 Beige G3 Minitower to close out the year.

Yeah, the condition of the plastics overall is really stunning, the only thing it's missing are the feet (which I have replacements for somewhere) and it seems like they often fall off mac desktops. Bad glue perhaps?

The $10 Beige G3 Minitower to close out the year.

Had a chance to sit down tonight and get it working. Took a little bit of doing, didn't want to show video for a bit. Had to re-seat the wings card, RAM, CPU, ROM, etc. Put a fresh battery in it, and pressed the CUDA button about a thousand times. Put a 256 and two 128s for a nice round 512...

    MacFox's Finds

The only thing I don't like about the 5300 and 190 is the PSU connector. It's harder to find (compared to the later style) and is significantly more fragile. Good find though!

The $10 Beige G3 Minitower to close out the year.

Yeah, the original PowerMac G3s make great bridge machines. Reliable, cheap, available, and has old and new interfaces to get you by.
