OK, managed to get the ring off. It had been hot glued in place for reasons I cannot fathom. There was nothing broken inside to warrant glue. It is now cleaned out and functions just as well as my other 180.
I just acquired another PowerBook 180 and want to clean the ball contacts. The trouble is that the ring holding the ball in refuses to rotate. Given how brittle this plastic is, how should I go about rotating it safely? Suggestions very welcome!

Woohoo, I just received 2 PowerBook G4's. One will be going to a young friend as her first computer! They are in remarkably good shape for their age. Very clean machines.
LOL, I can remember turning blue trying to explain to a client that they HAD to get a hardware modem because their company network wouldn't support software modems. "But a modem is a modem, why does it matter?" AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!
What would I need to look for to get wireless running on the G4 733MHz Digital Audio? There appears to be a connector on the motherboard, and an aerial wire connector as well.
Forgive me if I've missed a post with this info elsewhere, but as a neophyte, not only am I not familiar with the part names etc., but I would also like to see information about what tools and supplies are needed. I know soldering irons are required, but which ones. Suggestions of recommended...
A public THANK YOU to Wayne! Thanks to him, the HD is installed in the correct bracket, OS is installed and all is working fine. I currently am using a PC mouse and keyboard (sacrilege!) but am on the prowl for the original versions as supplied with the system. Thank you so much Wayne!!
I remember this discussion back in the '386 days. All tests run were almost identical as many other factors on the motherboard were involved. Also, no two motherboards of the same model tested identical.
