Lido won't fit on a floppy with both system software and other disktools. So just make a bootable floppy and put Lido on it. You won't have much room for anything else on that floppy. ;)
Does the drive still spin down if you power it on without the SCSI cable connected? if it does, then there's a problem with the drive. The old drives all should remain spinning as far as I know.
Even with the cable attached it shouldn't be spinning down. I have a bad drive myself, but it...
I've heard hotplugging (or unplugging/plugging in a keyboard/mouse while the computer is on) can blow the fuse. There is a fuse for it somewhere on the logic board. Unfortunately I think you need a soldering iron and solder to properly replace it.
I think I had some caps fail on my monitor a year back. It took 6+ months before I managed to set aside money to buy a replacement power board that had the capacitors fail. (the power board was only like $15 or so, but I had other priorities at the time.)
I noticed two caps were bulging on top...
Nevermind on the monitor. I think I found what you meant:
New 9" SVGA monochrome monitors $70 %5BeBay%5D
Cheapest ones I've seen are $65. There's still a original CRT for a SE/30 on eBay for about $10 cheaper then that and others in that price range might show up. So currently a more expensive...
Yeah agreed. I don't think it would make sense for a monochrome CRT to use a shadow mask. That's something color CRT's use and dot pitch is only relevant to those. There has to be separate phosphor for each color, so that's why you have a limit on how many you can have and still keep them...
How well does the SE/30 handle video? I wonder if you could play QuickTime videos on it and how much better they would look with the Xceed installed. I'd imagine frame rate might be a bit bad because of the age of the machine, but still would be something interesting to try. I thought about...
It probably can. There's nothing physically limiting the CRT itself from displaying as many greys as a normal B&W TV for that matter. It's mainly a limitation of the analog board/logic board of the original Mac. (that and an intentional design choice by Apple for the old Compacts. The...
Nice. I always wondered how the Xceed video add-on worked. So it comes with it's own special neckboard for the CRT and replaces the one that was originally driven by the analog board? (or does the existing one just plug into the logic board of the video card instead?) Either way that's pretty...
Unless you happen to come across one for cheap, I would think using a MacTV would be a rather expensive solution to this problem. :p
However while the CRT won't mount directly into the front case of a 575, perhaps you can use the front casing of a 575 on a 580 rear case? Unlike the compacts...
Ahh I see. A 2.5 drive has the same connector as a 3.5 one? With IDE drives the connector was smaller and combined the power pins. SATA only changes in form factor for optical drives. Wasn't sure about SCSI though as I've never personally seen or used one in that form factor. That and the newer...
I personally would not approve of putting a 10k drive inside a compact mac. At least I wouldn't put one in my own mac.
They get along fine with larger machines, but 10k drives generate more heat and draw more power then normal drives. Put it in a external enclosure if you can. :p
Maybe the...
I've read somewhere that it's easier to maintain the creme method if you cover the covered areas with plastic wrap which keeps it from drying out. I personally will prefer the submerge in liquid method. It will likely coast a bit more in material (like finding and buying a clear plastic tub...
If the IDE to USB board gone bad, one solution may be to bypass it to see if it's a problem with the drive. The USB to IDE board is actually housed in the cable you connect to the back of the unit.

Not sure about the newer models, but the original was...
There's a chance whoever replaced that drive wasn't aware it was a 800k drive. Outwardly, it's hard to tell the difference as they may look similar physically. :p
I'm pretty sure it was a Performa though.
It was definitely not a G3. It looked more like the 5xx series. If not the 575, something older in that line perhaps. It could have been a 580 if those were around in the USA. They look very similar to the older 5xx series. It would make sense if it was...
Unfortunately my drive doesn't use voice coil for the head. As far as I can tell the platters look clean on my drive. I opened it up briefly this morning and did not see any scratches/marks. Sorta odd how this drive just up and quit. The guy who gave it to me said it worked before he pulled it...
