What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

Yeah one of a few as i recall!

What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

Thanks for that! I played around with BeOS a lot, but the last time was probably a decade ago. I still have a few BT878-based PC cards lying around, so that’s actually a really neat idea you just gave me. I’m aware of the commercial software situation – back then I basically downloaded almost...

What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

Awesome!! That just gives me hope i'll probably get it running at least. If the second CPU will work.. let's see How's the performance on the Dual G4s?

What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

I probably wouldn’t go any higher than 8.6 anyway – that’s the sweet spot for those machines in my opinion. Hopefully I’ll find some time in the next few days to test a few things. I’ve got a minor surgery coming up in 7 days and won’t be allowed to lift anything heavy for a while, so that...

What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

Totally forgot about Beos PPC... love the idea! I found a thread on the Haiku discussion forums where somebody tried to create a crosscompiler to port modern apps to beos ppc.. This would be something, need to look this up further.

What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

Hi Herd! That’s exactly what I wanted to dig into more. OpenBSD/NetBSD still have great PPC support, and I can definitely imagine getting both CPUs running under one of those. That’s probably going to be a “winter project” for me to play around with. I’ve also been looking into T2 SDE, which...

What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

Hi Byrd! Thanks for your message.. that’s actually what I originally had in mind: using it for something more dedicated. I’ve got a TwinTurbo and even some faster PCI cards I could throw in. I do have several G3 Upgrade cards as well, but that would kind of defeat the purpose, since I really...

What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

Hi chelseayr! Thanks for your reply — I really should look into some apps that actually make use of the dual CPUs. OS X doesn’t see the second CPU anyway (even with XPostFacto), so if I run Mac OS on it, it’ll basically have to be “Classic” only.

What to do with a Powermac 9600/200MP

I’ve got a Power Mac 9600/200MP in my collection that I’ve never really used for anything. It’s been sitting on a shelf for about 5–6 years now, apart from the occasional yearly clean-out. The machine still works flawlessly, and with the hardware I have lying around I could easily upgrade it...

Powermac G4 MDD AIO Watercooling Concept/Project

Hey! I’ve been experimenting with sturdier infills on my prints since I recently upgraded to a Bambu Lab H2D Pro. I want to see if I can make the mounting adapter rigid enough so I don’t have to go down the route of laser-cut metal brackets. As you might know, most AIOs use Asetek pumps...

Powermac G4 MDD AIO Watercooling Concept/Project

Hi Herd, Long time no hear! 🙂 To your questions: Exhaust fan / fitment I removed the original exhaust fan and swapped in a Noctua 140 mm fan mounted on the 120 mm radiator. The radiator is small enough that the door still closes normally. CPU die coverage The AIO’s copper plate is wide enough...

Powermac G4 MDD AIO Watercooling Concept/Project

Nothing lasts for decades, even our trusted "retro-machines" .. without some TLC We always will need to re-work components, swap Caps, swap PSUs etc. I have been in the industry for 25+ years now repairing old machines (beside working on new ones) and i am constantly re-working / fixing my own...

Powermac G4 MDD AIO Watercooling Concept/Project

Been using hundreds (literally) over the last decade. I never had any leakage issues. The only thing on older AIOs is pumps sometimes dies. Especially on cheaply manufactured chinese off-brand pumps. These days it's just the norm in the PC Industry. Which gave me the whole idea.

Powermac G4 MDD AIO Watercooling Concept/Project

Hi everyone, I’ve been quietly tinkering with a project and wanted to see if there’s interest in a small-run kit. Quick background: my fiancée and I run the PC-hardware YouTube channel “tektherapy,” and I previously operated a console-mod shop focused on BGA rework/soldering. In short, I have...
