interesting :) id expect that CPU to work in a G3 BW, did you try and drop the FSB down to 66Mhz? (also might be worth running the G4 CPU patch, which stops the G3 BW from complaining about unsupported CPUs)

which CPU did you try I have noticed theres 2 types of 604 ZIFs one older? black type where you cant see the CPU it self, and a newer type which is a PCB with a 255CBGA...

found this has some interesting info but nothing on the clock multiplier for the CPU sadly
I do know when those 604e ZIFs are installed in G3 beiges the CPU speed is still set by the motherboard Jumpers, So I dont think the IBM ZIF CPUs...
indeed I have noticed those 300 pin ZIF 604 CPUs I have been meaning to pick one up to play with but I dont fee like paying £40 for a 20 year old CPU :) but indeed I too would not be surprised if its just the 60x bus in a socket :) I want to try one of these 604 ZIF CPUs in one of my BW G3s...
as Dan says the ZIF that comes with G3 BWs is not compatible with a 750CX

its cool to see the L2 cache is working, what is the L2 cache voltage on this card? because the 7400 requires a certen pin be pulled high or low etc to set cache voltage, where is the MPC750 just passes it straight through IIRC. so its neat to see L2 works at all.

Considering it happens during the Boot screen which is strictly the OpenFirmware frame buffer it looks like indeed something is up with the Graphics chip or related circuitry
im going to guess finding the voltage of the L2 requires googling for the specific chips data sheet?
when i get to the CPU card again (likely when i upgrade it to 1GB of RAM) ill make sure to grab a picture of the L2 and to check what voltage it is :)

I am happy to report some good news in regards to my Pismo that I upgraded the CPU on
as I mentioned in my other posts in this thread, while the CPU Swap went well it seemed the L2 cache did not want to work. a few weeks later i decided to give the 7410 a reflow to see if it would fix the L2...

when you say 750 are you talking about the MPC/XPC750 or the PPC750L? as the PPC750L by IBM has 1.8v 2.5v and 3.3v cache support.

I say you should be able to clock the 500Mhz 7410 to at least 550Mhz with out any issues, my 500Mhz 7410 is happily stable at 600Mhz in my Pismo :)

Yeah thats what I have found as well hence the some point comment, at that price point it aint terribly high up on my priorities :) its a shame the 4400 is so buggy at a firmware level as its not a bad computer otherwise
I dont know the dip switch settings off the top of my, head you will have to google for those or check the box it came in if it has one. but yeah if its showing up as 1.6Ghz in a GigEthernet G4 then your going to have to adjust the dip switches for a quicksilver otherwise it would run too fast...

Just figured id make a quick post about something I noticed in that I think the 333Mhz tray loading iMac Max did at the start of this May have used a 2.6v 750 it would explain why it ran so hot and never clocked past 400Mhz
