PowerBook 160 Bleached / No Contrast Screen

Process of elimination! It is strange though because before the recap it was a similar problem really, which makes me think there is another cause. It doesn't actually look terrible anymore if I slam the contrast all the way to the bottom, so I may end up compromising with that. I keep...

PowerBook 160 Bleached / No Contrast Screen

I have cleaned the pots. My current thinking is this. I didn't have any 3.3uf caps so I used 4.7s as I felt they would be within tolerance. They were fine on my 145, but then that's a monochrome display. With 16 greys it might be more sensitive. So I've ordered some new caps (frustrating how...

PowerBook 160 Bleached / No Contrast Screen

I touched on this in a previous thread (https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/odd-bodge-wire-on-powerbook-160.40023/) but it would likely have been lost by the misleading topic. I have a working PowerBook 160, but the screen is not behaving. When I first got it - no matter what, I got...

Odd Bodge Wire on PowerBook 160

I'm going to make a new thread as I don't think it makes sense to hijack this one. Botch Wire = Normal it would seem in this case, as the machine appears to be running normally :)

Odd Bodge Wire on PowerBook 160

Are you talking about on the invertor board? You think that could be affecting the signal voltage to the screen?

Odd Bodge Wire on PowerBook 160

I take it back - I was testing previously on the bench with no backlight and panel open - just the screen on a piece of paper. Now I've reassembled it's super bleached out. The more acute the angle I view from, the more I can see. There no polarising layer with these as far as I can see -...

Odd Bodge Wire on PowerBook 160

So the non booting was a red herring. Tried a different boot disk and that was fine. Just finished recapping the display and she lives!

Odd Bodge Wire on PowerBook 160

I have a PowerBook 160 that isn't working. Hear a Chime, nothing on screen. Boot from floppy begins but stops quite quickly and doesn't continue - floppy stays in drive. Starting some diagnostics now but I found this bodge wire. Did the 160 have a known fault that had to be fixed or something...

Guide: How To Repair PowerBook 1xx Series PSUs

My first one, I hit quite hard and the damage was so bad I broke the magnet on the transformer clean off. On the second one I tried to be as gentle as possible and still broke multiple components off. Even with heat applied, I just think it's more shock than they were designed to handle.

Guide: How To Repair PowerBook 1xx Series PSUs

I was under no impression it was a unique thought! I would argue this is certainly simpler - most people can solder 4 wires, plus it's a guaranteed fix. You can't always assume the caps are the problem - you can spend time replacing them and it still doesn't work. It then requires quite a bit...

PowerBook 145: No contrast AFTER recap

I tried that too. I'm not all that fussed about fixing at this point (unless I open it up again), but it's useful to know that is not intended behaviour. If you get a moment at some point, perhaps upload a short video of how it should look going from max to min?

PowerBook 145: No contrast AFTER recap

I used like for like electrolytics. I see a very small change and then a sudden drop off.

PowerBook 145: No contrast AFTER recap

Not wanting to hi-jack a thread, but it seems very on-topic. I also recapped a 145 screen. It seems fine, but I will admit, moving the contrast doesn't really change much at all until I go all the way to the end - pretty binary. Should there be a noticeable difference? The contrast itself looks...

Guide: How To Repair PowerBook 1xx Series PSUs

I've seen there are recap guides out there but sometimes these things are beyond worth repairing and I wanted to offer an alternative that has the same net result - a working PSU that looks original. Two of my three PSUs weren't working. One of them did nothing and the other would charge a...

    PowerBook 180 is wildly unstable

I found "Snooper" to be a useful tool as it can do a bunch of hardware diagnostics. I also made a bootable floppy disk that uses a RAMDisk. That way I can boot from this disk and then remove the floppy disk. This allows me to insert the disk with Snooper on and run the tests. The nice thing...

Tunnel Vision On Monochrome Active Matrix Powerbooks

Mine is definitely usable enough, but I was drawn to the 170 because I remember how much I loved the screen, so it would be a real shame to be sitting on a ticking timebomb. The people with half-broken or screens in much more severe shape are in the best position to try and experiment/solve...

    PB100 Screen with Line

Just adding this for other people that might search. I just recapped the screen on my 145 and suddenly a line appeared almost identical to the above! I used contact cleaner on both ends of the connecting ribbon so decided to open it back up. Near one of the caps I had replaced, there was the...

Tunnel Vision On Monochrome Active Matrix Powerbooks

I guess that puts to death the idea of it being heat from the backlights!

Powerbook 145 Rollerball only working vertically

I've managed to solve this - so putting what I did here in case anyone else has a similar issue. Unfortunately I couldn't tell you which did it - but I touched up the solder joints on the sensors for the horizontal and then I sprayed contact cleaner into the ribbon connector and that seemed to...

Powerbook 145 Rollerball only working vertically

Hi! Got a 145 I'm restoring. The rollerball works perfectly vertically but horizontally it's erratic at best, but mostly not there. Opened it up and as far as I can see it all looks good. There's no sign of debris on the spoke wheel that might cause things and I'm not sure where to move next...
