Well, potentially damaged. The black chip directly behind it got hit hard by the cap electrolyte. It may still work 100%.
I checked at my university makerspace to see if they had an ultrasonic cleaner, unfortunately they do not.
Were the prior II's subcontracted out? It's my understanding that the original II was an in-house skunkworks project carried out under Jean-Louis Gassée without the authorization of Steve Jobs. When Jobs was fired Gassée moved the II project out of the shadows. Was it just the case that was...
That Thunder IV is a very nice video card. I have the earlier "red nubus card" Radius/Apple 24AC and it's a good card, faster than a SuperMac Spectrum 24 in my experience. I imagine the Thunder IV to be even faster.
The IIfx's fast CPU will be able to pump data to the Thunder IV in a sufficient...
Anyone have any ideas as to why the Classic II isn't booting still with new caps? I washed the board well. The bootup process reveals a grey screen with two large vertical black bars. Could it be the missing cap at the back right corner of the board? The pad lifted so I have no easy way of...
I have a dead IIcx and a dead IIci that both require recaps to bring them back to life. Unfortunately I only have the parts to completely restore one of the two machines and it's difficult to decide which machine should get the full restoration treatment first. I'm short on superdrives, working...
My 800 has a power supply cable that comes in through the top side of the motherboard. It also has a socket on the board for the power supply to slot in directly like in the IIcx/ci/700/650. The socket is left unused.
I would have edited my prior post, but it won't let me now.
It's working fine. Nothing is fried. A blast of CRC QD Electronic cleaner all over the board has brought it back. I'm guessing some solder paste residue was shorting something out.
The CC is staying assembled from now on! No more...
It doesn't see the SCSI CD ROM drive. I swapped out the motherboard for the one from my LC550. The LC550 board sees the stock Quantum ProDrive in the CC and tries to boot off of it.
> :( Don't tell me that one of those stupid metal feet on the motherboard shorted out the SCSI controller...
Perhaps this wasn't a success after all. I reinstalled 7.1 from a new set of disks and everything seemed to be great. I opened up the case to do some CRT adjustments, everything was fine. I powered down the system and re-installed the bucket case enclosure. After that the system cannot see the...
Thank you!
So I replaced the missing C8 with a tantalum cap. The Color Classic is now 100% operational, including the formerly inop volume down button. I have to reinstall System 7 from a new set of disks though as my boxed copy of 7.1.1 Pro is having issues from floppy bit rot now. As far as I...
I didn't bother documenting my repair on film. Unfortunately something is still wrong as the system does not boot. I could not replace one of the capacitors at the back right corner of the board, it is just too tight of a fit and I am missing a pad. It looks related to sound.
The Mac will power...
I decided to recap my Color Classic first as the logic board has tons of space to work with. The board wasn't really attacked by corrosion yet so I had caught the cap rot at just the right time. It wasn't booting prior to this procedure.
Instead of trying to tin the SMD leads manually I used...
Thanks for sharing your test results olePigeon! Interesting to see it is faster, albeit only slightly faster.
I have the card installed and configured in my IIfx. I am unable to commence testing as my main bridge Mac has gone down hard due to an HDD failure. The IIfx has 82mb of RAM, the stock...
If you have leaking caps eventually the external speaker will fail as well. The electrolyte will eat away at the motherboard. It's not a solution, it's a band aid on a missing limb.
In my experience Macs made prior to 1995 are starting to have their caps fail en masse. I now have a small pile...
I ordered the caps from DigiKey. Mostly aluminum polymers with a few tantalum where I could not find matching AlPoly caps. Both my main Classic II and my Color Classic will be getting logic board re-caps done this time around. Total component cost was $22.
The SMD soldering technique documented...
I took out my Color Classic to test it and the caps have leaked onto the logic board, to the point that it will not boot. There is no corrosion yet. I would strongly suggest taking care of your Color Classics before they leak and fail. The CRT/PSU seems to be fine as it turned on with an LC550...
I got the card! ;D

Sorry it is rotated the wrong way, evidently the stock Windows 10 image viewer doesn't permanently rotate the image.
The driver disk included in the box broke AppleTalk in my copy of System 7.1.1 Pro. Perhaps that's due to...
I bought an Apple Ethernet NB nubus card for $22 on eBay. It's one of the few cards that utilized the A/ROSE multiprocessing architecture. Apple claims it's dedicated CPU and OS results in increased host performance when performing networking tasks.
Thread dedicated to the card...
It's my understanding that the Classic II is built on the Macintosh LC/LC II architecture. The memory controller/bus interface controller called "Eagle" can only physically address 10mb of RAM. The 68030 is sitting on a 16-bit data bus as well, further crippling the machine. Fundamentally there...
