After many years of delays on my part, I finally managed to get this specific Quadra 950. Many thanks to @Trash80toHP_Mini for taking a large detour on the way home to North Carolina through the countryside of Northern Virginia to hand it off to me. The Quadra fired right up without a single...
I used solid polymer SMDs which shoudlnt leak. These are popular on modern motherboards.
Your recap looks good! Where did you get decorative colored caps?
My IIcx has no feet. :(
It was a successful recap target though! My board wasn’t too badly damaged by the goo as I had cleaned the goo off the board on a regular basis. The job was pretty easy with liquid flux, solder braid, chip paste solder, and tweezers.
I would go all Japanese on caps...
Were all of the axial caps replaced with high quality japanese caps? My IIfx wasn't quite right until those were replaced as well as the SMD caps.
The IIfx is the only Mac I know of with dual sets of pads for every cap; axial has SMD underneath, SMD electrolytic have a 2nd set of pads for SMD...
Unfortunately there is no System 7 MP3 player that can use the DSP's. From my understanding no such thing exists because there is little to no documentation regarding how to develop of the Radius implementation of the AT&T DSP. The effort to build such an app would be tremendous. Running a...
Late reply, but I will explain.
The prior owner of my IIfx was a power user. I had obtained a large number of Radius Rocket cards in that lot. This was the haul:
I decided that it was irresponsible for me to hoard all of the Rocket cards for myself, given the rarity. If something were to...
The IIfx PDS card was never really used in a major way. There is an unobtanium 040 accelerator upgrade that required a motherboard chip replacement to work. There is also a SCSI card for the IIfx PDS if I can remember right, but good luck finding one. That slot was an evolutionary dead end...
I managed to get by with a single iron and desoldering via desoldering braid. Remove the solder on one side of the component, then heat the other and gently pull once the solder is liquid on the remaining side.
Works every time.
It appears to me to be a Vishay 10uf 16v tantalum cap. 10uf 16v is a common Mac logic board cap value.
It's a little worrying to see all these recent spectacular tantalum failures. The meme of "tantalum is good forever" isn't holding up.
Centris 650 is a middle-high end machine, a Quadra without the FPU and clocked at 25mhz. In all other ways it is the same as a Quadra 650 or a Quadra 800. Not junk. Q800 was high end, Quadra 650 was the upper portion of the middle high end.
Q840AV - Highsst end once released in 1993
Q950/Q800...
No difference between the ADB on button and the logic board on button. The IIfx requires two good PRAM batteries to start up, otherwise you will need to perform a "jump start" procedure by shorting a certain pin off of the power supply. I cannot recall which pin is the one you need to short to...
The Apple 8*24GC is a very nice video card. It's actually designed to go with the IIfx and supposedly has some special speed advantages when used in one. I have been looking for one for a while. For now my IIfx has an Apple 8 24 AC which is a rebadged Radius Precisioncolor card.
Be sure to...
The Macintosh IIfx shipped from the factory with 1 or 2 1.44mb Superdrives only. Are you sure that IIfx has an 800k disk drive? If so it's probably a retrofit original Macintosh II with a Macintosh IIfx logic board. Normally the upgrade from a II to a IIfx or IIx would include a new 1.44mb...
Interesting that a Toby card is being used in a Q700. It belongs more in a Macintosh II, IIx, or IIcx. Such a fast Mac like a Q700 should have a nice Quickdraw accelerated card occupying a nubus slot!
The mounting for the speaker looks identical to the IIcx/IIci.
You will need to replace some clock crystals to get the CPU to run at 33mhz. No guarantee that the motherboard will be able to handle other components linked to the CPU clock crystal at 33mhz.
Is it possible that the NetBSD project has the 1.6 packages archived someplace off the web? It may be worth reaching out to the project maintainers if possible.
The clones were indeed slowly killing Apple. Instead of taking the low end the clone machines were killing the margins Apple had on the high end.
Letting clone manufacturers build machines nearly exactly the same as the top end Macintosh lineup was foolish. There was little differentiating...
Pics of the whole external setup won't be coming until I organize my office. It's a cluttered disaster at the moment and I would be embarrassed to post it. Soon!
The Rocket should be fine with the Mac286, so long as it's display mechanism won't conflict with RocketShare. No idea about...
