    Troubleshooting Sonnet Nubus Accelerators

Ran into some interesting problems testing the cards in my collection. My plan was to sell the excess and hold onto 1 or 2 of the cards max. Sadly, the card I wanted to keep isn't working, it's a G4 equipped one. Unlike the usual L2 fault situation where the OS hangs when the Sonnet extension...

    Figuring out dead PowerMac 6100

My 1995 7100/80 has started to have its caps leak after being in storage for years in a semi parts state. Oddly my older 1994 7100/66 hasn’t leaked yet, nor have my collection of HPV and AV cards. These early PPCs are a pain to recap. So many SMT electrolytics were used by Apple to cut costs...

    IIsi Complete System & Extras

Ah the Iisi! I’ve always liked those. Had one for a while with Nubus adapter but ended up selling it to fund other Mac projects. Architecture wise it’s an interesting combination of a cut down IIci with a SE/30 compatible PDS plus some chips from the LC like the Combo SCC/SCSI controller. This...

PowerBook Tunnel Vision - Any cures for mild cases?

I realize that the tunnel vision issue is a fundamental problem with the sealing of the active matrix greyscale LCD panels. Is there any known workaround for the more mild cases of the problem? For example, my PowerBook 180 only gets 2 dark screen corners on the left hand side, they do not grow...

When I get a chance I will write down the part number for you off my spare IIfx logic board.

Sorry, it's sometimes difficult for me to pick up when people are joking or when they are serious here. :)

    lisa sin remarketing drive

I think OP meant Sun Remarketing, the company that bought the bulk of Lisa stock after Apple washed its hands of it.

IIci @68040: a way to improve performance and frame rate?

Few Nubus cards can approach the speed of the Quadra lines onboard framebuffer. The one exception is the ultra rare 8 24 GC from Apple, when used in a IIfx it will benchmark either at or slightly above a Q950’s framebuffer in Snooper. This is probably due to the IRQ management chip in the IIfx...

    IIfx and some issues

Your IIfx board seems to have a lot of electrolytic caps. All of the silver can caps need to be replaced. After 25+ years those caps are no longer at the right value even if they haven’t leaked. if you can’t do it yourself and can’t find anyone else to take it on I could consider it. I’ve done...

    IIfx and some issues

Those caps are related to general functions of the soft power circuit. If power from the keyboard button is not possible you must replace those capacitors.  If you upload a photo photo of that corner of the logic board we can say if it has leaked or not. Its the corner by the RAM and power...

    IIfx and some issues

There are two surface mount electrolytic caps over near the power button. Check that they didn’t leak and damage the traces to the button or the associated chips. Other than those two caps most IIfx are surface mount tantalum with a few axial electrolytic through hole caps.

Mac IIfx wont turn on (Replaced the batteries)

Ah that's a shame, the photo makes it look like the 2nd set is salvageable. Missed the part about rotted traces. This reminds me to recap my spare IIfx logic board. I did the main logic board already, that was a breeze compared to other Macs I have done.

Quadra 700 gets stuck at happy mac

With any system more complex than MS-DOS you should always run the proper shutdown command, otherwise corruption of the disk is a possibility. When you issue the shutdown command to the Mac OS it halts all disk activity, preventing random corruption from interrupting read/write. If you did that...

Mac IIci - Mouse pointer freezes when using RasterOps/24

I would also try reinstalling the system software to eliminate that as a problem source. RasterOps Drivers: https://vintageapple.org/macdrivers/video/knighttech/DiskImages/RasterOps/RasterOpsGFXInstall3.3.smi.hqx

Mac IIfx wont turn on (Replaced the batteries)

FYI the IIfx has redundant set of pads for all capacitors in the system, the blank pads to the right would work. Apple made logic boards for the IIfx with both SMD electrolytic and Tantalum caps, depending on supply chain factors. My IIfx is about 80% Tantalum, with the last 20% being...

Sound Manager 2.x - Anyone have it?

I need Sound Manager 2.x to do some testing with Sound & the Radius Rocket under System 6. Does anyone have it? I looked online for it and can't find it anywhere. Plenty of mentions, but no links. I tried looking in some old Apple Dev CD's and they didn't have it either. Thanks in advance!

Which Mac was the last that could run 9.22?

I can confirm the Mac Mini G4 is a very potent Mac OS 9 Mac, with some minor issues. Sound does work, but only out of the stereo out, and not in the sound control panel. I'm documenting the various little problems and will probably do a video on the tiny PPC powerhouse.

    Mac Mini G4 1.47ghz - Stock

I was casually browsing eBay and I came across a cheap working G4 Mini for $25. It has the stock config of 256mb RAM and a 80gb HDD. Photos in the listing make it look Iike it’s in great shape. Seller is throwing in a 1gb sodimm upgrade for it, although I will have to install it. The purchase...

Macintosh IIcx - CD Boot/Chime Issues?

Honestly this sounds like a cap problem. My IIcx was flaky and continued to get worse up to non functional status until I replaced caps. First major circuit to go is sound usually. I know the IIcx can boot from SCSI ZIP ok without any key combo

Lost in getting IIfx external SCSI devices to work - any advice?

Best bet would be to use software to read out the DeclROM. DeclROM will ID the card.
