Remember, these are 20 - 25 year old batteries. Any battery that old can leak or even explode. They're simply not designed to last that long. Personally I always dispose of batteries when they die.

To be completely honest that doesn't surprise me...a lot of PCs from that era don't really like drives bigger than say...8GB. I have an AMD K6/266 with a board from late 1997ish, and it doesn't like drives bigger than 20GB.

Sounds like the floppy drive heads are dirty. You can clean it with a floppy drive head cleaner disk (good luck finding one new though), or if you're very, very gentle, you can do it by hand with a Q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol. Also - with a G3 and that much RAM, I can't imagine you having...

Yep, its a common issue on slot loaders, mostly due to the excessive heat they generate, due to them not having a fan. I have two slot loaders, an Indigo and a Sage iMac DV+ - I haven't been game enough to pull apart the top half of either due to this very reason.
