    TCP/IP for Classic Macintosh

Yes, I will be distributing a beta copy of the PPP code for people to test. I will probably have something in early May. This weekend, I plan to get enough of the PPP Automaton written to establish a PPP connection. Yes, I have been looking for this source code.

    TCP/IP for Classic Macintosh

You know I was thinking about MacWorks earlier this week. I always develop my code according to Inside Macintosh, and I do not plan on accessing the SCC hardware directly. My TCP/IP should be compatible with a Lisa 2 running MacWorks, and it will certainly be compatible with System 6 and System...

External LocalTalk / serial port clocks

You need to configure the SCC in your software. Or use SerialDMA.

    Classic Mac as Serial-connected Terminal?

I recommend FreeTerm 2.0 for the terminal emulator, or ClarisWorks 2.1v3 if you've got a newer Mac. The hardest part is making the cable, but if you get a KeySpan USA-28X adapter, you can use a standard Apple printer cable.

External LocalTalk / serial port clocks

OK, now I understand your objective better. The clock can be supplied through one of the pins on the Mac's serial ports. It's one of the handshaking pins. The first-generation Macintosh hard disks like the Tecmar MacDrive provided a clock to operate at around 700 or so kilobaud.

External LocalTalk / serial port clocks

You should configure the SCC in software. I have attached the Zilog manual that you will need. It is difficult to understand this manual at first, as it is not so well organized, but after you look at some sample source codes too, you will understand it better. The file SCC.SDLC.Asm is what I...

    TCP/IP for Classic Macintosh

Yeah, I was bewildered by the number of variations on PPP. There's even PPP sent through UDP datagrams. But I have a much better understanding of it now, so I know where I'm headed with this.  :b&w:

    TCP/IP for Classic Macintosh

Your site is a great resource, by the way, and was part of the inspiration for me to work on this project. I have good news now. Today was much more productive. Now that I understand PPP's low-level framing and data encapsulation, I rewrote my code and at 3:31pm this afternoon sent the first...

    TCP/IP for Classic Macintosh

Thanks for the feedback; much appreciated. :-) But I've got some bad news, bears!  :-O  It turns out that PPP is not going to be such a walk in the park to implement as I thought it would be yesterday. This is not a show-stopper, but just some extra challenges for me the implementor to...

    TCP/IP for Classic Macintosh

A few years ago I wrote a TCP/IP stack called Marina for Apple II. I've spent the past two days looking into how to get TCP/IP on the original Mac 128K and 512K in a way that makes it accessible the greatest number of people, but also affords opportunities for application development: telnet...

512k keyboard not working - where to start troubleshooting?

Yeah, there's not a whole lot to go on at this point. My next thought is the keyboard cable, but you say it appears to be a genuine Apple cable.

512k keyboard not working - where to start troubleshooting?

This may be a long-shot, but I'll post it here because it happened to me. If the keyboard mapping software on your startup disk is corrupted, the keyboard won't work. There are two INIT resources in the system file, one for the main keyboard, the other for the numeric keypad. If these INITs...

    Very Early M0110 Keyboard?

Me neither. I think that serial number format is a little different, and that keyboard was more likely manufactured in December 1983. Open it and check the date codes on the ICs.

A few Mac SE/30 related questions

Probably not. Those CRTs were slightly bluish even in the 1980s.

    How do I get a 400k boot disk for a 512k?

Disk Copy may not be necessary for you and may actually be a hindrance. You can use the Finder to make boot disks. Disk Copy isn't essential.  If you can get the "bare" System and Finder file for anything from 1984 System 1.0 thru System 4.1/Finder 5.5 (which is the range of versions that the...

Please help me resurrect a dead 512k

A clear chime + Sad Mac could be either a failed ROM checksum test, or a failed memory test. But the fact that you hear the chime at all means that enough logic is working that the CPU is able to execute the instructions from ROM to make that chime and then later on show a Sad Mac on the screen...

    How do I get a 400k boot disk for a 512k?

You might already have everything you need. What is the oldest System/Finder version that you have among the SE and Plus? I'm not asking about disk images, but real floppies or HD. Is it older than System 6?
