PowerMac G4 Gigabit 500mhz Dual-Processor Server: Come help me max it out -- on a budget!

Oh! I've haven't used one before (or maybe so -- the overclocking Celerons might have used this). I'll keep that in mind before using it. As far as overclock speed? 550mhz seems to be universally stable overclock. I was thinking about shooting for 600mhz. The jumper pads allow for up 800mhz. I...

PowerMac G4 Gigabit 500mhz Dual-Processor Server: Come help me max it out -- on a budget!

Thanks! The intention is to set this machine up as a MacOS / OS X PowerPC time capsule. This is how I see the OS setup and their drives: Striped RAID 0 Quantum Atlas HDs 2x partition with: Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger MacOS 9 120gb Western Digital Caviar individually partitioned and installed...

PowerMac G4 Gigabit 500mhz Dual-Processor Server: Come help me max it out -- on a budget!

Thanks! I think it will be pretty fun to trick it out a bit. I was reading about overclocking and it looks fairly straightforward. I was thinking about experimenting with a circuit writer pen to see what I can overclock to before committing to a soldering a resistor in place. Consensus seems...

PowerMac G4 Gigabit 500mhz Dual-Processor Server: Come help me max it out -- on a budget!

I have 2 Sawtooths that I upgraded to dual 500 G4s (so basically the same thing as your machine). Nice. Right, aside from the ethernet speed (and probably some minor motherboard revisions) they're basically the same difference. Yours will be a good reference if I run into issues. Have 2x...

PowerMac G4 Gigabit 500mhz Dual-Processor Server: Come help me max it out -- on a budget!

After sorting through the parts containers, this is what I currently have on hand for upgrades: Julia audio interface/soundcard PCI card Quantum Atlas 18gb @10,000 RPM SCSI server drive Seagate Barracuda 18gb @7,200 RPM SCSI drive Western DigitalCaviar 120GB @7200RPM ATA-100 w/ 8MB Cache Apple...

PowerMac G4 Gigabit 500mhz Dual-Processor Server: Come help me max it out -- on a budget!

Currently this G4 is running off a 18.1 gb 10k rpm Quantum Atlas hard drive. This is connected to an ATTO ExpressPCI PSC (0042-PCBX-002) SCSI controller. I believe this is a Ultra 2 SCSI controller. I have an additional Seagate Barracude 18gb SCSI drive, but it only runs at 7200 rpm. I'm not...

PowerMac G4 Gigabit 500mhz Dual-Processor Server: Come help me max it out -- on a budget!

I’d like to do some budget friendly upgrades to my Gigabit PowerMac G4 500mhz dual-processor. I’ve been working on getting ready to thin out my Macintosh collection, and this machine is one of the few I’m keeping (along with a Plus and Tangerine Clamshell). I think its a great platform to...

Power Computing PowerBase & PowerCenter Boot issues

Well hmmmmmm. These machines are outside of my interest vs investment ratio. I think its time to move them on to someone who has more drive to restore them. Appreciate the reply.

Power Computing PowerBase & PowerCenter Boot issues

Tried using an replacement ATX power supply to see if that made any difference. It did not. Very open to suggestions.

Power Computing PowerBase & PowerCenter Boot issues

The PowerCenter and one of the PowerBase machines had a cache module, the other PowerBase did not. Pulling the cache on the two machines made no change in starting up. I also swapped the cache into the other PowerBase just to rule that out, and it also made no difference.

Power Computing PowerBase & PowerCenter Boot issues

I've got a few Power Computing machines I need help troubleshooting. None of them seem to want to boot. I get no start up chime or video output from any of the machines. I have two PowerBase 180 machines and a PowerCenter 120. The PowerCenter has booted without issue in the past, but has been...

iMac G4/800 "Mac OS museum" project questions

Thanks 68000. I was concerned that the PC100 would have performance problems or errors. Is there a good tool for checking RAM integrity? I've taken an iMac G4 apart before. It's a pain, but not overwhelming. And you're right, it's much easier to clean it up while in there, than to pull the...

iMac G4/800 "Mac OS museum" project questions

I've got an iMac G4/800 Flat Panel. It's the original "high end" launch model (everymac.com info page), that boots into both OS X 10.1+ and OS 9. I want to max out the RAM, upgrade the hard drive and put in a different DVD reader. My plan with this computer is to create an Mac OS museum on the...

    Cosmo's latest . . .

Thanks macdrone. Just came back to correct myself after looking it up on Apple and wikipedia. Still, it would be very useful. Any known reliability problems with them? I recall when they initially came out, people were complaining about the wireless dropping a lot. I remember one tale about...

    Cosmo's latest . . .

Oh, I forgot all about those. This is the one with the stereo RCAs on the bottom? If so, that actually would be quite handy for my stereo system. Being old-ish, I now have a few thousand albums that I've converted to VBR MP3 from CDs, LPs, and live bootleg recordings. It's too much for my iPod...

    AppleDesign Powered Speakers

I wouldn't think they would sound too great in a larger space. Definitely near-field monitors.

    AppleDesign Powered Speakers

Yes, they're actually pretty nice. When I disassembled them, I took a look at the driver and it's quite hefty for its size. I should also mention that these speakers are running on a single full-range driver, not the woofer/tweeter that most cheap computer speakers have. The slot on the top...
