NDIF disk images are different from UDIF disk images. You can use "hdiutil imageinfo /path/to/image.img | grep 'Format Description:'" on the Terminal to check the format. Be aware that macOS versions 10.7 and newer removed support for reading/writing legacy formats; only conversions are supported.
The port doesn't really matter, but you need a terminator on the bus. Some devices have a built-in terminator, while others will require an external one.

If the floppies are formatted as FFS/UFS, you may be able to mount them under Linux.
If the floppies are formatted as HFS, you should be able to mount them under Linux also.
When I was trying to use this image on my Macintosh IIci, I got Sad Mac 000000F/000021 error. When I held Command-option-shift-delete-0, it was showing as flashing question mark. When I held Command-option-shift-delete-1, I get the aforementioned error.

I recommend a IDE-to-SATA converter along with a SATA SSD. I believe that is the cheapest route, since IDE SSDs are expensive, and so are SATA PCI cards that are bootable.
