Can't PC floppy drives write double density? You'd think they could, having been encumbered with a compulsion for backwards-compatibility ever since RISC processors came out. (Not that I'm the one to talk, whining about Apple dropping AppleTalk from 10.4 to 10.5 and PPC in 10.6)
You could also...
My adjustable keyboard is very flaky, also using the mouse through it. ADB hotplugging damage? It's tempting to hotplug when troubleshooting.
Didn't Kensington make a product for...eh...lukewarm-plugging serial devices? With everything grounded there shouldn't be any risk.
'
I guess...
I read somewhere that you should absolutely not plug or unplug anything while the computer is on, but that might have been serial or SCSI. Still don't know why they said that either.
Were there ever made ADB hubs? The AppleDesign keyboard only has one port, and I haven't since seen a Mac with...
Shipping rates in the EU are way too high, the lack of integration really makes the whole notion of a union pretty silly.
What about Germany? They ought to have lots of Macs. Several of my Ireland made Macs even have TÜV stickers.
Bunsen, that was an interesting picture on the LEM site. I have...
I have come to really enjoy using classic Mac OS again, with my 7600 getting a key role in my photowork flow. And with on board SCSI and serial it's the perfect compatibility machine between old and new. But I'd really like to soup it up, in addition to making the photo workflow smoother, I...
It arrived today, and after much Googling I managed to find a French version of PolaColor Insight, which I installed on my 7600.
This is a 40 year old Kodachrome of Dry Martini, the family dog. The quality is great, I just need to clean the film before scanning. The 7600 doesn't really have...
Not exactly a viable business idea, but it would be neat to build a Retrobrite appliance. A big box lined with UV lights, a turntable for even exposure, and an air humidifier to keep it moist. I can't really see a retrobriting service taking off financially, though.
I finally found a SprintScan 4000 that wasn't priced out of the sky. It comes with a SCSI card, but he didn't say which type, and I didn't ask, just to make my 7600 feel useful. At 144 MB it should have enough RAM. The biggest bottleneck would probably be the Asanté Fast card not working, but I...
An old-style scope probe takes a crocodile clip on the other end, and that's an instant discharge tool. I'm not sure if it works with the new probes, which have — ironically — connectors designed to keep people from having cardiac arrests when hooking up their multimeters.
As for keeping the...
That is so cool!
The Pismo is one of my favourite Macs, and I'm so sad I can't find the power adapter. I should even have an extra battery for it somewhere.
I have an ex-ABB Corporate Research 170, whatever that means. No hard drive shows up when booting the disk tools, I had to open it up to see that it was actually there. I decided to have a look at the loose display bezel as well, but it turned out the whole lid is screwed to the hinges straight...
It shouldn't, but apparently cosmic rays can flip bits in RAM. A highly energetic particle in the wrong place at the wrong time and you could wake up one morning and find that the answer is 43.
Here's one for the "old computers for the poor" camp:

Perhaps an aptly upgraded 603 or 604 or a G3 with a good suite of creativity and curiosity-inducing software would strike a good balance. Or maybe the same with Linux...
