Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
I can't answer any of your other questions due to equal lack of experience, but to #4, adjusting the pots (= the little turning things on the analog board) for voltage, video, etc., happens after you have made any necessary repairs to the analog board and reinstalled the board in the computer...
This might be a stupid question, but have you followed all the steps listed here?
http://www.applefool.com/se30/
(hop down to "System 6 through Mac OS 9.2.2 Setup" if the part before is too technical, follow the steps appropriate for your OS)
I recently had to get my classic computers back...
I can't answer the PC question, but I can help a bit with the modern Mac question. I use zip disks a lot, but mainly for transport to the modern Mac, not from it. A Sierra Mac can read HFS zip disks (which is the only thing System 7 understands), but cannot write to them. If you have an OS 9...
Yeah, both classic MacOS and OSX are fine as long as you're just storing/copying/moving files.
Beware if you try to FTP directly between the two without stuffing/encoding first, though. I FTP things to/from my MacBook Pro often and learned this the hard way.
It'll work just fine for quite...
The .image file ought to be ok if it isn't used and never leaves a Mac environment. What I am vaguely remembering (the thread should be on the forums here somewhere, I just can't point to it right now) is that using an image on FloppyEmu, and then trying to open that same image file with DC 4.2...
Belatedly - thanks for the reassurance on APFS, it is much appreciated.
You haven't had any trouble with creating zips in macOS? I have seen a lot of zip files containing files with destroyed resource forks, but they may have been created/unzipped on PC computers, or maybe the files were...
Taliesin isn't a city either, so I'm guessing that they moved away from sticking to "World Class Cities" in 1985 and later. Certainly Courier, Times & Helvetica (1986) aren't cities. But I am as baffled as anyone else by the Mobile name. (I like the suggestions! They are fun. Maybe the...
Depends on the content of the img. I have downloaded .img files that turned out to be DC 4.2 files (some people use .image as the extension for this), some were DC 6.3 (often identified in Mac OS X as "NDIF images"), and some - many - were files with the contents of their resource forks damaged...
Nice!
I like your workspace - do you get those black (rubber?) squares from a Home-Depot type place? Any recommendations or warnings as to material? I'd like to use something like that on my basement workbench.
It depends on what kind of hardware you have.
By far the easiest is to use the FloppyEmu, but of course that involves investing in a unit (which I recommend!). Then you can use a modern computer and an SD card reader to write a dsk image to boot the Plus (and yes, System 1.1 should work if the...
Ah, thanks for reprinting the whole text of the post; I misspoke. I was vaguely remembering the disclaimer at the end, which of course I see now is the usual boilerplate.
Awesome, thanks for the picture! The one Von linked to is 12 inches long - do you find that's long enough to meet your need? I need to play around with this, I have SO many compact macs to work on.
I'm interested in this as well. Anyone have a link to a youtube video or site with lots of pictures? I am an idiot when it comes to hooking up wires (trying to learn).
I have a G3 which is throwing that same error! I had never seen it before and was baffled. I will have to read up on Open Firmware.
I have multiple other projects right now so I set the machine aside for future troubleshooting, but it is nice to have a clue to go on.
I certainly have never seen a 36 point Athens. You could generate it by blowing up 18 point to double size, but that probably looked pretty bad.
Why 36 point NY was dropped: good question. My guess is that for the purposes of the average Mac user, it quickly became obvious that 36 was just a...
I have a bit more news on Taliesin and Toronto.
@Rasmus shared some disk images with me (thank you!!). From examining them, I found:
- My guesses re: the font lineup for System 1.0 and System 1.1 were exactly correct (I am ridiculously proud of this - I spent way too much time researching that...
I feel grateful that I had a collecting phase between 1999 and 2002. I miss when working Pluses used to fall off trees (or the back of trucks). I can't even remember how I got my IIfx - someone may have given it to me for free at a garage sale. Now I'd love to get a prettier case for it (it has...
I feel like this must have been discussed somewhere, but I've searched this and other sites without much luck so far. If there is a good thread somewhere, please point me to it!
I keep the main copy of my classic Mac software collection (images, sits, isos, etc...) on my 2017 MacBook Pro...
