Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Sorry to tag on with the idiot questions, but what setting do you use on the multimeter (volts, ohms, etc)? Does it vary depending on the component, or are traces always the same setting?
Also, what size wire is best for bodge wire?
Sorry to ask the obvious, but are you quite sure that the analog to logic board cable is firmly plugged in? I have had this symptom more than once when I reassembled a compact Mac and thought I had cables plugged in properly when they weren’t.
Check the yoke board too (the thing that sits on...
Inertial computing also sells a bracket if you bundle it with a drive. It’s not fully enclosed like the thingiverse one, but definitely handy. It gives me something to grip when plugging and unplugging cables, lets the board rest inside an open machine for testing, etc. I am glad I included it...
I have been using these as well. Both the felt and the hard sliders work nicely. Here in the US you can get them at any Home Depot type store.
It is almost easier if all the feet are missing, but you can probably rig something up for a single missing foot.
That's the writeup I was talking about - it's the top article pinned in Peripherals!
I tend to prefer to build out my suite of vintage applications on a physical mac rather than in an emulator but I have the luxury of several physical vintage macs, zip drives, etc. I am looking forward to...
There is a detailed SCSI2SD setup guide elsewhere on this site (stickied under Peripherals). I recently set one up. I found the setup process fiddly but it worked in the end. I just got my external SCSI connector, so hoping to test out that functionality soon, but so far it works well as an...
Magazines are great and I comb through MW and MU regularly, but with a roughly three month lead time from “press time” to the date on the cover, tracking down precise dates can be really frustrating. Usenet articles are better for the moment to moment stuff.
Ironically I just spent the better part of the afternoon getting this to work! I bought the same 5.0b unit.
I am not sure I can help much as it seemed like it just required a ton of trial and error until something worked.
Some findings:
-- I never did get it to work on my Macbook Pro...
I sincerely hope that is a typo for "soap and water"...
(Though, would you want to use soap on a motherboard? I guess some people use dish soap, I generally avoid it.)
It's the Set Startup command in the Special menu. I don't have my System 6 mac running at the moment to double check, but I think there are several options you can choose, including the option of using Finder or Multifinder. Then restart.
Michigan, I think. He did an SE/30 for me and it was good work, though it required some extra investment to track down a bad sound trace.
I have heard that allcaps (in Florida, I believe?) also does good work.
Yes, if you read the old magazines from that era, the addition of the fan was a selling point for their memory upgrade. Larry Pina (Mac Upgrade & Repair Secrets) also recommends installation of a fan as a matter of course when doing a power supply (analog board) upgrade on any 128, 512 or...
I am in the market for a SCSI2SD as well. I was just looking at the site last night and noticed a warning that the v6 may not always work well with the DB25 connector (i.e. when used as an external drive with SCSI1 macs like the LCII). I was leaning toward going for v5 for that reason, since I...
Some people say you can just pinch the rubber neck of the cap with your fingers, but that never works for me. I like to bend the edges of the cap upward (makes it easier to see what I’m doing), then GENTLY push one metal leg inward with the tip of the discharge tool until it pops out easily...
Nice! I have a soft spot for late 80s and early 90s shareware. Would love to see a pic of the CDs if you ever get around to it, I wonder how many of them I have in my own collection.
The LC sounds like a good deal, maxed out at that price. I have an LC (II or III?) sitting in my project pile...
I have used this one. There are half a dozen other brands on Amazon that probably all work the same way.
Basically the stuff is just alcohol, I think, but it has the advantage of avoiding direct contact with an object that could damage the heads.
Error code ending in 40 might be a bad/unrecognized disk error (hence related to the drive) - can you copy down the exact error? Some other F errors have to do with bad RAM, etc, but those usually end in smaller numbers.
Are you able to start the 512K with a known good disk in a working...
