Sounds good, thank you @Juror22 .
Good news, floppy drive seems to ready just fine and inject/ejects smoothly.
Bad news, I’m thinking the aftermarket power supply it came with will need some maintenance. Computer runs great and very reliable for about 45 minutes to an hour, then will crash or...
Good to know on those caps and PRAM battery. Will have to find some time to replace those.
As far as power supply, I got fortunate (maybe) on this one that it came with an aftermarket model. Seems to work okay for now. Will probably still investigate after I go through the PowerBook.
Went to pick up a local PowerBook 165c that was being offered as not working. At $30, seemed like a fair price for a fun restore project.
Computer is in perfect condition physically. Applied power to it and it started with no issue, loud and clear chime, display working as good as the passive...
1MB would be perfect as it would (if I remember correctly from when I looked into this years ago) allow the full video buffer to load into L2 instead of main RAM (when using onboard video). This leaves the PDS slot open for other things like PC Card, etc.
If brightness knob isn’t issue, I’d say carefully open it up and make sure everything is still connected where it should be.
I know the Plus has a habit of cracked solder joints on the analog board that can be reflowed. Not sure if SE is known to have those as well. But if so, perhaps that may...
I picked up a new in box USB 1.1 card. The picture on the box had the correct CMD chip but when I opened the packaging the card had a different CMD chip (totally different numbers and square shape instead of rectangle).
If I’m remembering correctly, the RAM section being grayed out in the control panel is because it likes the RAM that is installed in the card. If it didn’t detect any RAM installed on card, that grayed out selection would allow you to specify how much of the Mac’s memory you would like to share...
I have a 6100 with the Houdini II card. With a separate 16MB stick of RAM installed on the card, it seems to run Windows 95b decently well (using I believe the PC Setup 1.6.4 drivers and Mac OS 8.1). Windows 3.1 also works very well.
I tried Windows 98 at one point with PC Setup 2.something...
Unless you have some specialty hardware (G3 accelerator, non-native supported network card, etc), the only things I’d add to 8.1 are a 2020 date patch of some sort and a screen saver. Otherwise just enjoy it with the software you want to use.
In my experience, 8.1 works great on every PPC that...
As someone with a Wallstreet, I agree it’s very temperamental.
Couple of ideas:
Make sure RAM is decent quality.
Confirm that metal cover plate over CPU is screwed down all the way as I believe that’s how CPU dissipates heat.
For OS 9, I believe I did a retail 9 install then updated to 9.0.4...
A 520 logic board can be bumped from 25mhz to 33mhz (which I believe is what the 550 board runs at) by moving a resister on the bottom of the board.
Also has the benefit of not being limited to 10MB of RAM like the stock CC board.
My initial guess is that powering both from the SCSI bus may be too much, potentially causing the voltage to drop and a symptom of that being the data corruption.
Again, this is just a guess based off my own experiences of running a Raspberry Pi at just under its stated voltage range and...
