well it would help if you gave more info what kind of imac what system etc it could be the vid card on its way out but if it is this is a very specific problem on that matter

sounds like faulty ram then my quicksilver decided to die halfway through an instakllation each time until i yanked out a 128 mb module which turned out to be defective have you tried pulling the ram yet ?

the processor is ona daughter card so its not too hard to upgrade to a 500 mhz or a G4 cost however i agree you are better off looking in to a tibook unless you absolutley love the G3 powerbook formfactor then go pismo

well maybe but it involves tearing them both apart as far as i recall both use normal eide cables and you could use an extended cable if the eide cable of the slot loader isnt propriety which i think it is not sure why not hook up an external usb cd driver ? thats a lot easier
