PowerBook 500 series PCMCIA module Rev C teardown

Whoa, I didn't realize you posted this, or that this thread had any movement going - I've been working on some other project lately. Thanks for posting the Rev B board! I thought the two would be much more different; it still doesn't seem like a simple chip swap. If you have software that can...

    PowerBook 550c

Finally. Found an SSD that couples with the ADTX perfectly! So the CF scene did not pan out well; the 4GB PATA Silicon Drive CF that I picked up had the same result as using the Transcend 4GB and 2GB CFs. No go.  What did work was this SwissBit P120 4GB commercial PATA SSD. Installed on the...

Booting 170 off SCSI CD Drive

The way that I booted a CD drive on my 500 series is by booting from floppy with the FWB CD ROM extension dropped in the extension folder. The extension is around 360-370kb+ CD drives I’ve been using are Panasonic drives starting with “KXL-“ and have a SCSI2 Port. I’m not very familiar with the...

    PC Cards for Powerbooks

So far, on my Wallstreet PDQ, a Sony PCWA C150 (not S version) is recognized and works on macOS 9.2.1 through Airport utility. The utility shows all nearby hotspots. It is an 802.11b card with up to WEP encryption I believe.  I also got a “hide away” 2 USB port PC Card that works with it, on...

    Revived a Powerbook 520c

Nice little computer :)  I thought about tethering the PowerCD on my Blackbird, but I felt it was a tad large for a CD player. Nonetheless, it's refreshing to see it, matching color and Apple logo.  My 520's hinge is the same way. Opened it up, tried some super glue, broke again. Did not feel...

    PowerBook 550c

That might be the issue with mine, if it is an earlier version. Or probably some variation between my ADTX adapter from your ACARD.  I was thinking this might have something to do with it. I got the 2GB Transcend 133x CF card on Friday, but installing it yielded no change; it does not even...

    PowerBook 550c

Strange, I was thinking the SCSI IDE adapter is suspect to being picky itself. Maybe it’s your PCMCIA adapter that is also picky?  I also thought about card size being issue, but as Byrd reported above, it sounds like maybe he got a 16GB to work in his? If I have to drop down to 1GB...

    PowerBook 550c

I finally got the CF adapter, after nearly a month of waiting for it from overseas. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get the 4GB Transcend cf to be recognized! I tried a 16GB and 64GB Sandisk cards as well, no dice. I even installed the 4GB into my G3 and initialized it there, but the 550c still...

Large Powerbook Lot (inc. 4 PB 2400c)

I’m impressed. I’ve checked CL a few times for vintage items, but didn’t think I would have any luck doing a WTB post out here in AR. Never know what you can find, but nice job on the acquisitions. That is a nice haul on the 2400c PBs, and also that 180c.

PowerBook 500 series PCMCIA module Rev C teardown

Glad to help out. Too late :-/  Honestly, I think the solder mask on top is a bit thick for me to discern any traces. However, it seems that the SMT row could be connected to vias through the board; you could see the zig-zag pattern of holes/vias preceding the SMT row where they connect. I...

PowerBook 500 series PCMCIA module Rev C teardown

Mods are gods :) I finally got around to disassembling the 520. Recently got my IC extractor and I wanted to try it out anyways. Suffice to say, it did not disappoint.  I'm going to say this is a draw. It appears there are three rows of pins. The first inner two, closest to the connector...

PowerBook 500 series PCMCIA module Rev C teardown

If I ever get my hands on a Rev A or B (or both) card cage, first thing I'll do is disassemble it/them. I wasn't sure how serious of a project this could be, but I like where this momentum is going

PowerBook 500 series PCMCIA module Rev C teardown

So picky! I've already assembled my PowerBooks back together, but I may teardown the 520 later this weekend if I have some time. I should have said that it looks like through hole, but you may be right. I know that the battery connectors were through hole....oddly, the connector on the 550c was...

    MacFox's Finds

Good catch on the DVD card, I rarely ever see those in the original box. They don't pop up too often by the card itself. I always wanted the WallStreet when I was much younger; always thought the design was so classy and well defined. It's insane to think how much they were worth brand new at...

PowerBook 500 series PCMCIA module Rev C teardown

Wow, I see you've been busy studying this project. I'm wondering how the Rev B PCMCIA module looks like, too. You might have to pick up a "new" Blackbird to play with now. And at least you haven't lost your 1400 PCMCIA project through the years!  I posted these in my Conquest thread, but here...

PowerBook 500 series PCMCIA module Rev C teardown

That's too bad about USB! Had my hopes up lol I can't speak for the 1400 cage, but the 500 module is very light. The external casing is completely plastic with "gold" or bronze-ish paint. The internal metal is actually quite thin.  It's the battery that is more like a brick in comparison. This...

PowerBook 500 series PCMCIA module Rev C teardown

    PB 540c — advice please

Nice find (and price). Looks like you've already got answers to your questions. I've also switched between using the power adapter that came with my 550c with a 520 I bought recently. It also looks like it can handle both 100 - 120V and 200 - 240V, so you should be fine.
