Alright, I ended up doing it over IrDA with a Pismo. It actually wasn't as slow as I expected.
I've never done an IR transfer before, and it's interesting to see it in action. In a way it's a pain in the rear to keep line-of-sight, but at the same time it's a great 1990s novelty that's still...
I have System 7 on both 1.44 and 800K. I also have 7.5.5(1.44) on floppies, and I think it also came on CD. 7.5.5 is a big stack of disks-I think 14 or 15.
Apple has OCCASIONALLY conceded and offered an alternate medium for distribution, especially when the OS will officially run on computers...
I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that the SE required ROM upgrade to make use of FDHD drives. I seem to recall that if you put in a Superdrive, it will only work as an 800K drive.
I'll try to test it this evening, as I have one of each(regular and FDHD) as well as an external...
As said, disk copy works great for this. You will get a .smi, which will mount just by clicking on it in OS 9.
Also, a lot of the things you download from Macintosh Garden and the like are .toast images. Even though Toast is primarily a burning program, it's worth having a copy on your computer...
With regard to the earlier question of reformatting 1.44mb disks as 800K, my success has been very poor with this at least when it comes to previously written disks. Roughly 9 times out of 10 in my experience, the disk will erase but will still fail to correctly initialize. Sometimes 2 or 3...
The Yo-Yos with the large barrel plug work with all Powerbooks from the 3400c to the Pismo along with the clamshell iBooks.
Just be aware that there was a version of the Yo-Yo made for the early TiBooks and snow iBooks with the small barrel plug. These are a fair bit less common than the large...
I have to agree with the above-when the rubber meets the road it's really difficult to top a Pismo even if you can get faster(absolute) clock speeds in the white iBooks.
Like a lot of folks, I can take a Pismo apart in my sleep and something like a hard drive swap takes about 10 minutes. After...
With as long as I've been playing with Macs, I'm actually a bit ashamed to have to ask this, but I'll swallow my pride and ask it anyway.
I recently picked up a Wallstreet(292mhz). The HDD was blank when I got it, so I initialized and installed the retail 9.2.1 disk(I haven't updated it to...
I'd vote for a Wallstreet or PDQ. As said, you must have an internal floppy drive, and these were the last laptops with this option.
Both of them are at least semi-useable in the modern world with a bunch of RAM(I think 384 in the Wallstreet and 512mb in the PDQ) and have the advantage of...
I have advocated the mSATA route for a while for a variety of "unusual" applications. I have a trio of last generation Powerbooks(12" early '05, 15" and 17" DLSDs) running 128gb mSATA drives and they are impressive. At least on the DLSDs, the drives will saturate the bus save for about a 5mb/s...
I flashed a PNY FX5200 a while back for use in a B&W with a G4 upgrade. The one I have is dual VGA and has 256mb VRAM. I have the Quadro equivalent to this card, which is dual DVI, but I haven't gotten around to flashing it.
nVidia cards are a bit of a pain to flash since they have to be...
I've found the 0 cycle count to be normal behavior with EOL or near EOL batteries of all types. I'm actually not sure offhand if the cycle count works on the Pismo batteries-I have some working NOS ones that I can check.
You can likely recell the 20min one and get it to work. The completely...
I don't see any obvious reason why that wouldn't work, plus it's a nice size and a great price for a 5300.
One of the nice things about SSDs is that you can be a bit more creative with the mounting options since they're lighter and don't vibrate. I have velcro on the one in my Mac Pro, while...
I've yet to see a situation where Panther ran noticeably faster than Tiger on any given set of hardware. To me, it's hard to make an argument for using Panther in any situation anymore as the software availability for Tiger is many times better.
I have the Acard mentioned above along with a couple of different Sonnet cards. My Acard is 133, while my Sonnets run from 66 to 133. All of these cards are bootable.
These are really useful cards to keep around. Aside from being to use less expensive and more available ATA drives in beige...
I received one of each color on Friday, and they look great!
Both fired right up and-amazingly-have working batteries. I haven't tested the battery life yet, but it's at least enough that the computer will completely charge and will stay asleep if unplugged. Anything is a big improvement for me...
I'd disagree with that statement(typed from a dual 1ghz Quicksilver with 1.5gb RAM that runs Leopard as its main OS).
I don't like Leopard with under 1gb, but anything above that will generally be okay. It does run decently well on G4-upgraded beige G3s, which max at 768gb.
One of the biggest...
