RAM math makes it impossible to do a direct head-to-head comparison since the 3400c has 16mb on board and the Kanga has 32mb. That gives a max of 144mb for the 3400c and 160mb for the Kanga.
To be fair, my Kanga is maxed at 160mb and my(working) 3400c has 48mb. Even so, the Kanga feels more...
Just wanted to follow up that I'd received the replacement NOS logic board, and it's working great now!
I just need to get a permanent HDD installed(I grabbed the one out of my IIci when I was playing with it last night) and then decide on an OS.
I'm actually really tempted to try A/UX.
I'll try to photograph mine tomorrow if I remember to. It's in the G5 Quad I use(occasionally) at work.
Generally, if you put a PC card in a PPC Mac the computer MIGHT not boot or(more likely) the computer will just ignore the card.
Interestingly enough, since OS X 10.7 it's been possible to...
You make me less worried about the box full of Canon F-1and F-1N focusing screens I have stashed back in the closet.
I'm also kicking myself for passing on a bunch of F&H branded bayonet filters and lens hoods at an auction years ago-I think I checked out at $30 or so. I bought a Rolleiflex...
Per OpenMark, the X1900 and FX4500 are pretty similar with the X1900 being a bit faster

Don't get caught up on VRAM.
This can't be emphasized enough.
Heck, I've been proclaimed a "hero" at work more than once for coming up with the right combination of cables and dongles to make two things talk to each other.
If you're working with 68K and early PPC Macs, you should, IMO, have a few serial cables, a few ADB...
Most of the cards I've bought included one. There are generally a couple of 7800GTs and FX4500s on Ebay at any given time-I'd suggest just choosing one with the cord included there's little to no price difference. It beats having to buy one from a separate source.
There are four common GPU options for the late '05(PCIe) G5s
1. The 6600 variants, which were the standard ones
2. 7800GT(mid-range BTO)
3. Quadro FX4500(high end BTO)
4. X1900GT(retail)
The Quadro is a big "sexy" card that everyone wants. The official G5 version can usually be had in the...
Where the heck did we even talk about using it as a boot device? Cory seems to be the only one rambling on about that.
The original question was how to get files on the computer.
I hate to say this, but a certain admin on this site has almost turned me against posting here...especially since...
Do you have a later PowerBook(up through the VGA TiBooks) or an early tray load iMac G3?
If so, AppleTalk over IrDA is probably the simplest since it "just works" and doesn't require any cables.
Otherwise, AppleTalk over a printer cable or even EtherTalk(use a crossover cable) to any other OWR...
Both of my duos have serial ports-they're located under one of the flip down legs. The easiest way to transfer files is via Appletalk-you just need a serial cable and to hook it up to another Mac.
LCDs have come a long way, but I've yet to see one that renders reds as well as even a mid-range CRT in good condition. Granted CRT calibration does drift like crazy and if you're particular about color rendition you should calibrate them once a week or so. The late Apple ones with built-in...
This has not been my experience in any way, shape, or form.
BTW, Quartz Extreme IS enabled in Tiger(and Leopard, if you have a G4 and do some extra work) if you have a Geforce 5200 or 6200. The 5200 is usually recommended due to bandwidth constraints on the bus.
I flashed a PNY branded 256mb...
I have no doubt it's slow.
A friend of mine just put Tiger on a Kanga the other day with 96mb of RAM. I think Geekbench took about 3 hours to run and returned a score of 95. Perhaps he'll post here about it.
The same friend has been trying to get me to run Tiger on a 603e. I don't have a 128mb...
Agreed. More RAM is always better, but I've never had issues running it on computers like Lombards or iBooks with RAM limits in that ballpark.
Don't talk about Tiger running slow until you've run it on a 604e with a few hundred MB of RAM.
You have to downclock B&Ws to to 66mhz for the Sonnet 1ghz, and the RAM isn't as much of a hindrance as you might think.
I didn't build this computer, but it has a fair few "go fast" parts including a 15K drive and a Radeon 9200. I love the amount of legacy support it has also vs. a...
I will not install a G4 in a desktop-the minitowers and AIOs are just plain easier to cool.
Granted my best one is a minitower with a 1ghz Sonnet. It's a monster of a processor card that actually has two fans on the heatsink and requires external power. It makes the computer fly, though.
I...
I find it a bit amusing that to many "computer guys" now, a desktop means any computer that's not a laptop. Admittedly, I'm guilty of it myself.
Back in the day, there was certainly a clear difference between a desktop and tower. I can remember that-as a rule-towers often took more of an...
