    Powermac G4 Identity Crisis

Never tried it, but I don't see why not. You'd also have to knock out the place for it. I don't remember offhand if it's stamped into the case or not, but I expect it is. With that said, if you need/want ADB and a G4 you're better off with an upgraded B&W IMO. Also, I love my ADB...

    PowerBook 170 Charger/PSU

Thanks-I've noticed that it will actually tend to go away if left on its own. As far as using another HDD/boot disk, I don't get a flashing question mark or any indication that the boot is progressing past just giving me gray screen with an active cursor. I suppose I can pull the HDD out and...

    Powermac G4 Identity Crisis

Yes, the Sawtooth and following are totally different internally and also eliminate the handy bus/multiplier jumper block. One interesting thing about these compared to the B&W is the heatsink. Unlike the flat and squat B&W heatsink, these look a lot like a mini Sawtooth heatsink.

    Powermac G4 Identity Crisis

The Yikes!(PCI graphics) identifies in system profiler as a PowerMac G3. In truth, it is a B&W G3 in a different colored case with a G4 processor and no ADB port. In fact, if you look at the LoBo, it has the solder pads for the ADB port. It raised my eyebrows on the first one I bought, but...

    Usability of 10.3.9 in 2017

I've found Tiger more than acceptable on the Clamshells where I've run it. I leave Spotlight on because I use it(one of the killer features that I always miss in earlier OS X versions when I use them) butt the key is giving it time to index. Once that's done, it really isn't so much of a...

    PowerBook 170 Charger/PSU

Thanks for the help. I'll probably try to tackle it this weekend. I did remove the bottom and reseated the RAM card, but had no change. I really can't part with this one-it was given to me by a very dear co-worker. Her husband has alzheimers, but he was a big Mac guy and AFAIK this was his...

    PowerBook 170 Charger/PSU

I have a floppy that came with the computer and is marked PB170 boot disk, but the computer doesn't really seem to do anything with it either.

    PowerBook 170 Charger/PSU

Thanks. I pumped it up to 9V and found that I could also put the two separate PSUs in parallel, so power is now no issue(it's reliably running between 1A-1.5A with a battery installed). It seems as though I possibly have deeper problems, though. Usually, on a "cold" start, I get a...

    PowerBook 170 Charger/PSU

Hi Everyone, I was given a PowerBook 170 today(and some other goodies like an extra battery and a charging cradle). My issue is that the PSU seems to be dead on it. A whack on the side will sometimes get it to read in the 7.5-8V range on my VOM, but it won't stay there. Does anyone have any...

    G4 vs G5 iMac performance

Even the best iMac G4s are bottlenecked by their GPUs in OS X. With that said, I've never been a fan of the iMac G5. They run hot and have a lot of issues. G5 towers are a different story. I'd agree that an earlier Intel iMac running Snow Leopard might be ideal if a tower is out of the question.

    build my own duo dock

Just going to mention the fact that DuoDocks don't HAVE to be expensive. I paid $50ish for one shipped on Ebay that included a(working) 210. I had the "tick of death", but with a new C28 in the PSU it was fine.

    PM9600: No video out

I don't know where the crazy idea that the B&W/Yikes cards won't work in anything but those machines comes from. I've used dozens of these cards in every generation of PCI Mac from the 7200 all the way up to the last PCI G5s. The card is not the issue, especially if it tests good in other...

Classic mode on iMac g5: OSX 10.5

If space is at a premium, you can always go for a laptop. TiBooks are a perennial favorite of mine, but any G3 PowerBook or iBook would serve you well. Later is better, though, since you get more modern connectivity(i.e. you need a Lombard G3 at a minimum for USB).

Classic mode on iMac g5: OSX 10.5

There's nothing wrong with dual booting 10.4 and 10.5 also, although you would have to partition the drive. Unfortunately, the only way you really have a chance on the iMac G5 is to run 10.4. Picking up an older new world ROM Mac-particularly something that can run OS 9 natively-is always a...

    Challenger's conquests

I'm usually boring and name mine Macintosh HD unless I have multiple OSs installed. In that case, I name the volume after the OS installed. I always think it adds a fun dimension to a used computer, though. I also miss the customized fold icons in older versions of Mac OS. A co-worker has...

    Getting 9 on a 1ghz TiBook

Before going any further, right click on your HDD and check to see if it shows that the OS 9 drivers are installed. If the OS 9 drives are not installed you will not be able to boot OS 9 off the hard drive. There is no practical way to install the OS 9 drivers without re-formatting the drive...

Power Mac G4 AGP Rhapsody 1.2v3 install

When you are booting into the installer, are you initializing the disk with disk tool on the installer? As I recall, Rhapsody/OS X server volumes are somewhat proprietary, although it's been a little while since I've played with it.

    Use PowerPC for a week?

I am particular about color, and I use a couple of metrics. Admittedly I use LCDs almost exclusively now, and I have a couple of metrics. At the end of the day, though, I want to lay a transparency on my light table, have it look the same on my screen, and have what I see on the screen(and what...

Can't Install OS 9 on my iMac G3

Late iMac G3s will usually have bootable USB devices show up in boot selector, so they are comparatively easy. Booting from USB showed up with the Sawtooth(machines that predate it will not USB boot) but generally became more difficult across the board as USB 2.0 started showing up. I...
