Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
I have a 1ghz in a Minitower, and although I primarily use it in OS 9 it is quite useable in OS 9 as well.
It does sometimes remind me of starting a carbureted car on a cold day-if mine hasn't been on in a while, it sometimes needs a couple of starts and maybe a PRAM reset to get it to boot...
I've run Vuescan on G3s, G4s, and G5s.
I'm currently running three scanners off a dual 2.7 G5 using VueScan, including one old Polaroid SCSI scanner. It takes about an hour with my Epson V700 to scan and process a 4x5 at 6200 dpi using Digital ICE, but gets the job done.
I'm a big advocate of...
NT 3.5/NT 4.0 have always been a bit of an enigma to me in terms of processor support.
They're GREAT x86 OSs and so much more advanced than their contemporary Windows products-in fact Win 2K was NT 5.0, and I think all versions since XP have continued with an NT-series number.
With that said...
Unless you are a GPU collector and/or want the best possible Apple card to fit in an unmodified Cube, the Geforce 3 isn't worth the trouble of finding. I hunted for one for a while(I fall into both of the mentioned categories :) ) and managed to get two within about two weeks of each other. I...
I have some also. I too have a big collection of the old ATI cards that used them.
With that said, the best way to get more VRAM in a minitower is a Radeon 9200 :)
This is why when I "build" a G4 tower, I decide ahead of time if it's going to be an OS 9 or OS X computer by choice of the video card. Of course, good OS 9 video cards(like the Geforce 4Ti) still do well in OS X, although CI are best for Tiger and later.
Thanks.
The drive has a pasted-on paper sticker with a red Apple and "40" on it-it's the same style as I've seen on other Apple drives of the era. It was sold to me as Apple OEM, and even though I don't recall seeing a Quantum 2.5" drive, it still looks and feels to me like an Apple drive...
I've had some time to play with this some more, and I'm a bit lost.
I bought what was supposed to be an NOS 40mb Apple-branded Quantum HDD on Ebay. When I power on the computer, I can hear it spin up and seek, and then get a floppy/question mark on the screen(all expected). If I pop in the...
Alright, I'm trying to get my 170 actually useable after getting a new hard drive in it. I found a 7.5 universal restore disk on the garden that's labeled for the 170, so I want to try that(before plan B-installing 7.0.1 from floppies).
I can't seem to get it to boot from my CD-ROM, though. I...
PM me if you do decide to rid yourself of it-I have a 520c with a 133mhz PPC that would probably appreciate a drive that large.
I sold a perfectly working Duo 210 to a friend a couple of weeks ago, and I told him that for the sake of the laptop it was probably a good thing he had it-otherwise...
Well, I finally got around to messing with again.
It seems that the HDD is indeed dead. I pulled the cable to it, and the computer booted right up from the floppy drive. I guess it got stuck trying to boot from the HDD.
In any case, I'd hoped the HDD worked-it spins up, but I can't hear it...
What specific programs are you running and what specific incompatibilities are you having?
It would be VERY unusual for hardware that works in 8.6 to not run in 9.x .
It comes across to me that you want to use 8.6 for philosophical/emotional reasons and not out of true need. If that's the...
Do not use a GPU newer than a Radeon 9200(really 9000 if you are limiting to AGP cards, as the AFAIK the 9200 Mac edition was only available as a PCI card) or Geforce 4Ti in any version of the classic OS-the drivers do not exist for them. The experience is sure to be miserable.
Also, there are...
Yes, it supports accel in 9.2. AFAIK, all non-CI AGP GPUs do, although you may have to add extensions with certain cards.
I honestly don't have the time or inclination right now to install 8.6 on a Sawtooth and test, but given that the PCI 7000 was supported back in 7.6 I think it's probably a...
On second thought, I really have more crap on my plate to do right now that test an obscure combination of applications.
Supernova777, I've spent many hours of hunting and probably over two thousand dollars putting together the full range of AGP PowerPC GPUs. I bought them for specific...
I consider 8.5/8.6 to be quite a different OS from 8/8.1. In any case, that's splitting hairs.
And, again, you're asking specifically about AGP GPUs. There was a 6 month window when 8.6 was current and Macs with AGP slots were available.
To be honest, though, I see complaining all the time in...
I think the lack of information is that the combination of 8.6+AGP graphics is quite uncommon. Remember that OS 9 came out while the Sawtooth was still current.
I own at least one example(I'm underestimating-actually most likely two or more) of every single Mac-edition OS 9 compatible AGP GPU. Yes, I even have the rare ones like Geforce 3s(multiple).
IF I have time this week(I have to also get the head pulled off the engine in MG in my limited evenings...
As a side note, the Radeon 7000 ME that I seem to come across most often is the single VGA like what shipped standard in the Xserve G4 and I think was optional in the Xserve G5. I've actually noticed some oddball behavior when using these cards in B&Ws and other pre-AGP Macs, but most of...
