I think it was a design goof in that it was less elegant than having all the controls on the wheel, but in real world use I haven't found it to be a problem. The 3rd gen controls are still far superior than most non-iPod music devices.
I've also got a few 500 series batteries, none of which are salvageable because the corrosion is too severe. The cases literally shattered when I tried to open them.
This panorama was taken with a QuickTake back in 1996 and assembled in Photoshop. I did a bunch of others back then but have since long lost the images.
All of my early Intel iMacs died quickly. I don't think they had adequate cooling. After the first one died I started paying close attention to the temperature sensors. They ran warmer than they should have at light use, and when there was heavy extended HD use, such as with video encoding or...
I think there are outliers, specific examples of machines that live longer than most.
I have a 17" G4 iMac that is similar, it just keeps going. Later iMacs that I also bought new died relatively quickly after just a few years of daily use, but that G4 has been solid.
Self-powering is obviously the best, but I wouldn't object to a USB port for power. I have many video devices that require additional 5V input (switches, adapters, converters, upscalers, etc.). There's a bunch of peripherals for my other old hardware that require an additional 5V input as well.
So if a knowledgeable and generous soul figured out the LCD signal and adapter requirements, we could potentially have:
an adapter for the old LCD signals to modern LCDs as replacement panels
an adapter for the old LCD signals to modern e-ink displays as replacement panels
an adapter for the...
Thanks for finding that, it didn't show up when I searched.
I knew about using an external display with the models equipped with that capability, but the 100 / 140 / 145 / 170 don't have that feature. It would be nice to "salvage" those machines with by adapting the LCD video output to an...
With so many PowerBooks becoming useless due to screen issues, has anyone tried to use the otherwise working boards by "converting" the system into a small Mac desktop?
It seems the only major hurdles would be adapting the PowerBook display cable to VGA or HDMI, then finding a monitor that...
I love those 12" PowerBooks. I've never had one but wanted one since the first time I used it in an Apple Store. I had a 15" and loved it, but the 12" is my favorite — I think maybe because it is one of the most kawaii computers ever made. One day I hope to finally acquire one.
Nice! That's in great condition. I always liked the appearance of the iBooks.
I'm curious what you think of the performance after using it for a while. A decade ago I picked up a G4 iBook (don't remember the speed) but it was much slower than my G4 iMac 17" and 2005 Mini. After a year of...
