Could be that the CRT or coil is faulty/shorted and caused the burn marks in first place? I dont know what happened to the machine before. I'm sure I cannot power on the analog board without a connected CRT, which makes testing the AB difficult. I have another CRT/coil from a battery bombed...
I have an 512k Macintosh on the bench which I'm about to revive. I did not turn it on upon receiving the machine cause the analog board showed burn marks on the coil connector. I know this type of damage from my Plus but not that severe.
I replaced the connector and the plug on the CRT...
I modded the PSU I got and can report success. Even with an 17 inch LCD Studio Display it works properly. Granted, the Cube has an SSD not an spinning harddrive, so the load on the PSU should be lower than normal.
In the end it was a grounding issue I believe. The upper part including the button was mechanical not connected to the base. Just plugged into the LB for testing. As soon as the metal touched the base it all worked as expected. So the metal top must be connected to the base in some ways to have...
I got a second Cube recently but unfortunately its missing the PSU. I want to build a replacement PSU and want to use a ready made one. I can order a 28V PSU which has a rating of up to 3.4Amps. This is around 100W. It should be enough to power a stock Cube, right?
Granted, using it with an...
Could it be a similar problem I had with a SE/30 drive a while back? https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/blown-component-on-sony-mp-f75w.44807/
I tried running it without the eject motor, but this seem to kill a component (Q4) on the drives PCB.
Small but important update: It's not the CPU that is faulty. It must be the power switch. As soon as the power switch of the cube is connected to the logic board it powers on instantly, then flashes a few times and then power cycles. If I disconnect the power button module this does not happen...
I want to downgrade my new G4 Cube from a active cooled 1.2 GHz CPU to a stock configuration to make it fanless. I got myself a 466 MHz CPU card from an later Sawtooth I believe. To make it Cube-"compatible" I have to raise the CPUs multiplier from 3.5 (466 MHz = 133MHz bus * 3.5) to 4.5 or 5. I...
I got myself a replacement drive. Exact same model as mine. Much to my surprise this drive has the exact same problem. It does not recognize a inserted disc. It this a common fault with these drives?
Replacing the drive would be an option for sure. But compatible drives seems rare. As far as I know only the iMac G3 slot loading drives are compatible. And most of the iMacs came with CD drives not DVD. Writing discs on the Cube is not a priority for me.
But if you are documenting fitting a...
I got myself a G4 Cube for a reasonable price. It has its problems I have to work on. One is a disc drive it was damaged in a way I never ever saw before. Someone managed to jam a floppy disk into the DVD drive. It was not visible from the outside. The only thing that was more than unusual is...
The bezel arrived today. It fits like it was built for it. :-D All in all it seems no problem to fit non-Iomega drives.
Maybe I'll paint the drives dust cover and face plate black or better dark grey at a later time.
Unfortunately access to the open firmware does not work when the G3 is in the "black screen" state. Only Command+v works to bring it "back to life". Today I switched the graphics card to an Radeon 7000. It should be from an G4 but it wasn't working at all in the G3. Probably this was an...
My "new" B&W tower is getting shape. I upgraded it to 1 GB RAM, found a working USB2 card and replaced the hard drive with an SSD. Also a "new" Radeon 7000 is on order. One issue I noticed is a little bit strange. I reinstalled both OS 9.2.2 and 10.4.11 in a dual boot configuration. OS9 on the...
