It could be the picture, but that back looks like a third party replacement to me, just comparing the fonts to my white 3GS. It's possible someone tried to repair it and either didn't get it back together correctly or damaged something (or the battery is just dead, I suppose).
Those are the springs that kick the battery up when you release the latch.

You'd need the Newton Connection Utilities program. IR syncing was screwy though so it may not be 100% reliable. Most of this stuff should be obtainable at UNNA, the United Network of Newton Archives.
The Fix2010 patch would be a good start as well, and, IIRC, it's also on UNNA.

I mean, I guess a museum isn't a valid source? Ultimately if you want to preserve them long term it may not be the best choice.
