They're exceptionally fragile these days (the 8100 shares the case), which is a problem.
Not sure about the 8xx but you have to remove the entire logic board to swap/add RAM on the 8100.

I'm about 99% sure the Lombard hinge won't work. The chassis are very different.
All the white iBook G3's past 600MHz are time bombs. The GPU's will fail, just a matter of when.
Clamshells are tough, but getting the hard drives out for replacement is not fun.
I'd go for a PowerBook with good hinges. I have a Clamshell, a PDQ, and a Pismo. Pismo wins. :)
Keep in mind the Xserves have the Apple Drive Modules you have to work with, or hack new drives in. It's not like a Power Mac where you can just slap in any drive with a couple screws.
The first gen Intel Xserves are pretty cheap right now AFAIK. A friend just got one and pressed it into service.
Edit: said it was $80 shipped on eBay.
