    Dead PB G3 Pismo

I received two PowerBooks G3 for parts. One of them was complete, but not working, the other one was missing some parts, so I made one from two. But I want to get the other one also running. The dead one has at least two SMD components on mobo shorted out (i believe they are the transistors)...

MDD G4s - need to unplug them *every time*?

Reset PRAM and check PRAM battery. Also there might be caps inside the PSU going bad, causing erratic power-on/off behavior, but they were not problematic as, for example G5 iMacs.

    iMac G5 black screen

Update: Yesterday I got a ALS 17'' G5 iMac from a friend, which has a bad LCD (randomly appearing lines, but desktop could be seen through), but otherwise in working condition. I swapped the panels, and found out that LCD from my iMac is okay, since it works correctly on the ALS. His panel on...

    6100 missing ROM

My firend picked up a lot of old Macs that were sitting in a basement for last 10 years. Mostly from the 1991-98 era, including two Power Macs 6100. I fired them up... and nothing! Then I realised that the ROM chips are missing in both, such a bummer. Is there a way of getting them? On eBay...

    Miniscribe 8425S SCSI drive

Thanks for the info. Yes, I agree that the stepper motor sound is very nice, probably on the par with an old ST-225 and ST-251. I found the Silverlining here:https://www.lacie.com/us/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10052 Is this the right version? It looks a bit newish, but it seems to work on...

    Miniscribe 8425S SCSI drive

I just picked up an old Miniscribe 8425S SCSI drive, which sadly doesn't work, so I figured that I might be able to repair it someway. It spins just fine, but it doesn't mount. When I want to format it with a HD SC Setup 7.5.3, it shows as uninitialized, and when I try to initialize it, it tries...

LC II no sound after recap

Thanks. I also had the feeling that the UB10 is the problem. I will do that when my SMD station arrives, since I ordered it about a week ago. I also have a dead LC III board, from which I can salvage the UB10 IC, since they are the same. I will post the results

LC II no sound after recap

Here you go. I did some soldering around the sound IC, so there is some flux residue.

LC II no sound after recap

Baked it @200F for about 15 mins, and now it makes something like a "moo" sound through the speaker, so something is going on. EDIT: It only did that when it was still warm, now when it is cold, it is the same as before.

LC II no sound after recap

I could actually bake the board, but I don't understand why would be this beneficial. The board has been throughly dried after a wash-up.

LC II no sound after recap

I have just recapped the LC II. After a recap, it worked correctly -- it had a steady picture, it chimed and it booted off the SCSI CD-ROM into System 7.5. Then I installed the Asante network card, which was originally installed, and it stopped to chime, but it boots and works correctly...

    iMac G5 black screen

I tried booting in safe mode but it is the same. Also zapped the PRAM twice and replaced the PRAM battery. LCD cables look good, and I have reseated the both connectors. I am afraid that it might really be the GPU, but it has a GeForce FX5200, and I don't remember seeing these fail.

    iMac G5 black screen

I received a dead iMac G5 yesterday. It is a 2004 17'' model. When I got it, the unit powered on and chimed, but when the backlight came on it flickered and then the iMac died few moments later. It had one blown cap on the motherboard which I replaced (1800uF 6.3V Rubycon which I replaced for...

    Recapped Quadra 660AV no sound

Well, I will try to find some time and go through all my solder joints again. Now I have some tube radios to repair/recap :p . But I believe that the board is toast, since I remember powering it on when it wasn't recapped, and it also didn't chime, it just made a very quiet chirping sound...

    8100 PSU failure MagneTek

I recently acquired two 8100s with blown PSUs. One had a Delta, which I also described in other topic. The second has a MagneTek PSU (Made in Italy), which is also blown. I have never seen a PSU made by this company, and it looks cheap compared to Delta. It was also all riveted together, so I...

    8100 PSU failure Delta SM-220DB

Yeah, it is 4148, the last bar is grey, not blue. But now after replacing this diode, the transistor (BD537) gets hot almost instantly.

    8100 PSU failure Delta SM-220DB

I disconnected the shorted diode and now PSU stopped making any smoke or blowing fuses, now it just makes very quiet buzzing. The charred resistors are probably undamaged, since they both have the same value of 180 ohms when disconnected. Yes, I am also quite sure that something else must have...

    8100 PSU failure Delta SM-220DB

The diode D952 (next to resistors) is shorted. Anyone knows what diode should I use as a replacement?

    8100 PSU failure Delta SM-220DB

Power Mac 8100 was bought as non working. I plugged it in and after 4 seconds, something blew in the PSU. When I opened the PSU, I found out that fuse was blown and the PSU was very dusty. I cleaned it an then replaced the fuse and plugged it again, now there was another bang, but the fuse...

    7100 recapping

I recently acquired a 7100 that used to crash a lot when starting. I didn't hear any cases of 7100 needing new caps, but anyway I checked them. I then found that one silver SMD electrolytic cap has leaked (near the CPU). It was 6.3V 100uF, and I replaced it with a new tantalum. Now the machine...
