The cheapest genuine used ones I found were about $50 USD delivered from US. So it would cost about $200 USD to get the adapters for the all my PBs, not including possible import charges. Of course most of them would need recapping at some time or later, so yeah... not really wanting to go that...
I usually reflow all of the solder joints on these 128k/512k/SE analog boards with fresh solder. Takes about half an hour, and then you can be sure it will not happen again. I began shotgunning them after I spent few hours on a 512k board that worked for half an hour then the CRT started acting...
Yes, that is absolutely correct. The International version has a jumper that needs to be added and that switches it from 120V to 240V.
But, I thought that there might be a way to modify the 120V only version to work on 230V. Maybe change the rectifier diodes, change the capacitors to 400V or...
I recently got a nice condition Macintosh Plus with one major problem: the previous owner got it from USA and therefore it was a 117V unit. Which he plugged into the 230V mains that we have here.
He said that the machine even started up and ran for a few seconds, then it died with some smoke...
Anyone knows of a suitable aftermarket AC charger to use with an PB1xx series of laptops? I guess that 7.5V 3.0A regulated PSU should be okay.
I own 5 of these PBs, but I only have one charger for them. Used ones are prohibitively expensive and almost unavailable in the Europe.
Thanks
Yes, there is a fuse, although is a 3 pin device, it will not blow if you disconnect and then reconnect the cells from the main control PCB.
If it is blown, the battery pack will not be recognised in Tiger under Power in System Profiler, also it will not even try to charge it.
I only found the...
I seen worse. If you are very lucky, it might be salvageable. If these old Macs had the same PDF style Ctrl+F schematics with the digital board views like newer logic boards have, repairs like this would be much easier..
Dishwasher is a nice idea, but I doubt it will help. This residue that...
I just acquired a PB 140 in a very good condition. It needed some stuff to be done (recap the LCD screen, lubricate head bearing in the HDD as the HD wasn't recognised, etc.). The funny thing is, I got it from Germany, the keyboard is US and the system is Japanese (System J-6.0.7.1).
However...
At this point I really don't know what to look else. I will do diode checks again tomorrow, maybe I missed something. I hope that it is not the main VLSI chip, as I don't have a donor board that has another one, and I am not taking it off from another working Classic II board.
Well I guess the...
Compared diode mode measurements and found no big differences.
I discovered that the SCSI chip is actually a combo SCSI/serial IC. Here is the datasheet: http://www.datasheets360.com/pdf/-7619436183003849492
Perhaps I have a problem with a serial interface and not with SCSI.
There are also...
Thanks. I guess I moved the files instead of copying them... anyways the Dropbox links are not relevant anymore, as they showed mid progress status (garbled screen, etc.).
The SCSI chip is good.
I replaced the SCSI chip with a known good from another Classic II and put the original chip on the...
I replaced the SCSI chip from a dead LC III, but I get the same problem with the other chip present. It will sound chimes of death after few seconds.
But there is a possibility that this chip is also dead. I doubt that there could be anything else wrong besides SCSI chip, but still...
I will...
I removed the SCSI chip. Booted it without it. It now goes to a blinking floppy disk icon and I get mouse pointer. If I insert bootable floppy, it will boot from it, but it hangs on the "Welcome" screen.
Is the SCSI chip culprit, or do I perhaps have problem somewhere else?
So I am getting...
Done some work in past few hours.
I've replaced the memory before with some from the LC III. I now decided to put the original memory back. At first I had about the same results, but then I reflowed each solder joint of the chip with a lot of flux and now I it chimes with an error chime, but...
I tried this mac after almost 6 months. I still hope that I might be able to fix it, as it is a very nice machine.
Tried it today and got some activity, but not much. I hit the reset button about 30 times, and I got blank screen about 30% of the time, in other cases, I got patterns like these...
I pulled out the Power Supply board and the Analog board and did a quick ESR check. Three caps were a bit high, but still within the tolerance window, but I replaced them anyway. Currently I don't really have much replacement caps, and all of them were quality Nichicon-chemicon brand, which...
Did a logic board reset and it worked for a while, but after about 10 minutes it still started to act up.
No arcing snaps were heard anymore in about 2 hours of operation, so I believe that there must have been somekind of whisker or dust accumulation and it arced beacuse of that.
So...
