Getting my macintosh plus to boot from a external hard drive

That large of a drive could definitely be a problem, along with OS 9.1. That's virtually the same size partition and same OS that's on the G4 tower I have had problems with connecting to from Macs of the Plus's vintage. I didn't mean to use a boot disk to connect to the Performa. I meant that...

Getting my macintosh plus to boot from a external hard drive

You may find this easier: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.0.x/System_7.0.smi.bin Apple has a copy of System 7.0 800K disk images on their website. You can download those to your Performa and...

Getting my macintosh plus to boot from a external hard drive

You're not going to be able to open much in the System Folder with a System 6 Mac. The control panels (Sound, Mouse, Startup Disk, etc.) are designed to be opened from within the Control Panels desk accessory. If you don't, you're going to get the error message you get in the images. The label...

    Mac IIsi Power Supply Problems

I'm familiar with the IIcx/IIci/Quadra 700 issues. I have at least one machine that exhibits such problems myself and, though I haven't taken the time to work on it, I've found that the power strip workaround is acceptable. It's definitely not a motherboard problem. I've already isolated it...

    Mac IIsi Power Supply Problems

I pulled three IIsis out of storage that worked when I put them away over a year ago, and now two of them have dead power supplies. I was able to narrow the problem down to just the power supplies by swapping components into and from the working unit. Last night, I tore into the power supplies...

Can a 9 gb scsi hd go into a Dou Dock?

Copied from my post on another thread: System 6 and 7 up to 7.5 only support partitions up to 2 GB, but will support a drive larger than 2 GB if partitioned into 2 GB sections. However, Apple's drive partitioning tools only support eight partitions per drive, so you're looking at only 16 GB...

    SE/30 FDHD replacement

The drives in the Performa 6xxx series were manual-inject versions, whereas your SE/30's defective drive is an auto-inject drive. Electrically, the auto- and manual-inject versions are compatible, so you could use the Performa's drive into the SE/30 without a problem. However, there are...

    Classic has no sound

It won't hurt it, it just makes it easier to get snapped off if you're not careful, and washing the slots themselves can fix some connection problems with the RAM SIMMs.

    Classic has no sound

Indeed. I just fixed an SE/30 with the same symptoms with a little isopropyl alcohol and some cotton swabs to rub away any oil, corrosion, or whatever may be on the board. On the Classic II, I believe the sound chip is integrated with the EAGLE gate array, so look for the big VLSI chip on the...

    Booting problem

Does the same thing happen when you boot from a CD? The only disk check I can think of that's triggered at startup was not introduced until Mac OS 8.5, which I can't imagine you're running on an LC 550. If so, I think that might explain some weird behavior. ;)

    Performa 638CD needs some help

There's a limit imposed on drive size, but it's exclusively a result of the operating system rather than any inherent hardware limitations of the Macintosh. System 6 and 7 up to 7.5 only support partitions up to 2 GB, but will support a drive larger than 2 GB if partitioned into 2 GB sections...

    Performa 638CD needs some help

The CD-ROM in the Quadra is indeed SCSI, so that doesn't indicate whether or not your IDE bus is bad. Almost every brand of hard drive you'll find should be jumpered to master, except for Western Digitals, which should have no jumpers at all. What version of the Mac OS are you booting the...

    IIcx Time Problem

Several power supplies were swapped in and out, and since I'm doing this in a bedroom not in one of the chemistry labs at the university, I don't think there's any strange EMI. The date doesn't matter. All Macs have full support for the Y2K rollover up until the year 2019; it just sees the "7"...

Local Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics!

Almost all of my non-Apple monitors are Dell rebranded Trinitrons that I pick up from thrift stores around the area. Most of them I get have the same color problems where blacks appear green or sometimes purple. I've found that the "Color Return" feature of these monitors (I'm not sure if it's...

    IIcx Time Problem

So, back in town and on a bizarre sleep schedule from time zone changes, I was finally able to work on the Mac again. I tried a new keyboard, mouse, and video card from another working Mac setup, and the time problem continues. I replaced all the RAM with 1 MB SIMMs from a IIci, but no dice. I...

    IIcx Time Problem

phreakout: Doesn't SuperClock just display the System 7 clock's time on the menubar? I've never actually used it because I've never actually cared about the time on the menubar, but that would be my guess. But not only that, since this machine is running as a server, it needs to have accurate...

    IIcx Time Problem

Yes, the PRAM battery was included in the swap, but I had already replaced it with a new one in the original IIcx. I don't think the battery is the problem. And yes, SIMMs are loaded in full groups of 4 matched sets -- 4 x 4 MB and 4 x 1 MB. If I remember correctly, it was only the Mac II that...
