    Hee-hee, no X for you!

Lowest I've ever had I think is 10.4 on 128MB, which is usable but only just.

    Mac plus and ethernet

I think that is correct. Certainly I myself was a little stumped by this until I started NCSA Telnet which activated Mac TCP.

    The M0001 Registry

It's unlucky really, I myself administered an online discussion forum for a while and the number of bogus registrations it received was unbelievable. Fortunately I had it set up so that I had to personally approve registration before someone could post, which was a good way to snare the robots...

    The M0001 Registry

Just thought I would resurrect this old thread. I've just been looking at the M0001 registry again and it seems that most of the later registrations are spam, with adverts for drugs etc. Any chance that these could be removed, because they kind of bring down this otherwise excellent database?

    PowerBook 1400 PCMCIA compact flash

Ah, very useful info - thanks! The speaker in my 1400 has always sounded like that, (I got it just over a year ago), and it is terrible when trying to play any sound files containing speech or music. I've always thought that the 1400 speaker let the model down, I'm guessing that's why Apple went...

    Farallon Ethermac PCMCIA w/ dongle!

Nice one! They seem pretty hard over here to find for some reason.

    Looking at a PowerBook 520c

I have a 520c running System 7.5.3 with 8MB RAM and it is quite usable. I might change it to System 7.1 though as it is a little limited on memory when running larger applications. Other than that it is a good machine and the built-in ethernet is a nice bonus, (as mentioned above, you will need...

    2 SE/30s!

Good clean looking machines, though they sound very starved in the RAM department.

    PowerBook 1400 PCMCIA compact flash

I bought a 1GB AGFA Photo high-speed compact flash card and it arrived so I was able to try it out. Firstly I plugged it into my PowerBook 1400 using a Sandisk PC Card compact flash adaptor and the card appeared on the desktop. I formatted it using "Drive Setup" version 1.7.3 as a standard Mac...

Power Mac G4 (mirrored door) totally dead--power supply?

Have you tried a CUDA reset? Look for the little button on the motherboard and give it a push for a few seconds. I've had to do this with G4s before and it sometimes works, my G4 needs it pretty much every time after the power has been unexpectedly cut off.

    Sega Game Gear

That's very cool. I remember when those were fairly new and they were indeed very expensive. At that time I also had a Master System but it died several years ago and got chucked out, (though I still have the games and accessories). I'm thinking of getting another Master or a Game Gear with the...

    Swap drives

It will work fine, so long as the machine you're moving it to will run OS 9 then there should be no problems.

    EEEPC!

I've used one of those with Xubuntu and I was mightily impressed with it. There is something quite special about a portable Linux computer that you can carry about in your coat pocket!

    Compact Mac theory

Technically this theory is correct but realistically, re-manufacturing very obsolete computer parts would be difficult. The majority of technology is driven by the same force that drives pretty much everything in the modern world - money. No modern company is going to be interested in making...

    PowerBook 1400 PCMCIA compact flash

Super, thanks for sharing those details! I'll look into getting a decent compact flash card, possibly a Sandisk "Ultra II" as they seem to be selling quite cheaply on eBay at the moment (about £10 including shipping for a 2GB). The Sandisks certainly seem to be the most widely available from...

    PowerBook 1400 PCMCIA compact flash

I'm toying with the idea of using a compact flash card and PCMCIA compact flash adaptor with my PowerBook 1400c instead of a hard drive. I am aware that there are Addonics IDE compact flash adaptors about but I'm more interested in having it running through PCMCIA so that drives can be quickly...

    Apple Remotes

The older black Apple remotes are compatible with all of the 63x, 6xxx and 5xxx machines. In my experience, the remote can be used to change channels with a TV tuner, control speaker volume, toggle between Apple Video Player and Finder and control CDs (skip, pause etc). Of course, you can also...

    Loaded PB 1400 on EBAY

To complete the system I would swap out the dual scan "cs" display for an active matrix "c" one. I did that with my 1400 and the improvement is stunning. Stupidly I never put a bid on a G3 upgrade that was on eBay UK about a year ago and it sold for very little. However, there is such a thing...

    The Space Bar

Yep, the spacebar on my Plus' keyboard and a few of my early ADB and extended keyboards all seem to be slightly more beige than the rest of the keys. I've heard somewhere that the plastic spacebars were provided by a different manufacturer than the one that made the rest of the keys, and it has...

    Quicktake 150

I got myself an Apple Quicktake 150 on eBay the other day and it arrived yesterday. It is in very good condition and came complete with box, disks and close-up lens. Apparantly it used to belong to a college in Cheshire and there were pictures on the camera when I got it. For laughs, I...
