Yes, I would say so. The Retrochallenge is pretty informal and intended to be fun, the only real guideline is that projects should be carried out using something that is over 10 years old, which your Gameboy is by far!
It takes an Ever Ready B122 according to the label inside, unfortunately the dead battery is long gone. The B122 is still available from Radioshack under the guise of Ever Ready model 412. It is an unusual 22.5V battery which I have never seen before. I'll see how easy it is to get one in the UK...
Both very good finds. I especially like that fan, though it does look like it would happily chop off your fingers if you were to venture anywhere near it with them!
Last week I scored a 1970's sound monitoring meter from work along with various calibration fittings. They are all high quality...
Make sure you have Appletalk activated on the iMac's ethernet connection. You may need to download something like Gimp Print to get it to work, I think I had to do this in order to get my LaserWriter Select running with OS X but it was so long ago I can't really remember. IIRC, printer setup and...
Nice set of conquests. You got an Acorn A420 for £10, wow that really is a bargain! Usually the A3xx and A4xx machines go for much more than that.
I'm reckoning your LCD TV didn't work with the IIGS as it won't be syncing at traditional CRT TV frequencies, which is what the IIGS outputs. I use...
From my experience, (in the UK), they are quite scarce and one tends to only come up on eBay every couple of months. It is more common to find them installed in machines but then there is the issue of whether to rob a working SE/30 of it's card or just use it in that machine.
When the cards do...
Mine is specced as follows:
G3 tower
266MHz G3
512MB RAM
Wings AV card
10GB hard drive (originally from a slot-loader iMac)
Mac OS 9.2.2
CD ROM
Zip 100
This machine is my Mac OS 9 workhorse which I use for any power-hungry apps that won't run on OS X, such as the (free) full version of...
Do old PRAM batteries have a habit of exploding when dropped? I thought it would more be due to a breakdown of the battery casing through leakage, exposure to damp conditions or overheating.
Both my SE/30's are 1990 machines with one having the serial CK00702MKH1 and the other CK0420YFKH1. Despite both being manufactured in Ireland and sold in Scotland, the warning (about high voltage inside) text on the back of the case is in German - I'm not sure whether this is normal for a UK...
Of course the thing that the government in the UK forgets is that there is a large number of people who live in the country and not in towns or cities. Our government sadly believes that the world ends at the borders of London and that beyond that there be monsters! Where I live there are about...
That's very unlucky, having your Pismo nicked. If it was a PowerBook 5300 the thief would soon be brought to justice when the battery self-detonated...
Without intending to drift off-topic too much, I'll just make one comment. I've just done some sums and taking a typical high-ish UK current price for unleaded petrol (from our local Esso petrol station) of £1.20 per litre, per US gallon it would cost £4.54, which is $8.84 at the current...
$4 a gallon, that's bloody cheap compared to what we pay here! ;)
Might be worth saving them if you're keen to have a play with the beige G3s, otherwise they're pretty common machines so you may find one closer to home. It's a sad fact that many G3 era machines are currently being trashed, if...
Wow, what an amazing find! Finding one of those in a recyling centre is definitely a prepare-to-change-your-underwear moment. I'd like a Mac TV but I'm pretty sure they were never sold here and are NTSC only.
What he said. Sadly, CRTs are pretty much "out of fashion now", including most of the iMac G3 models, meaning that they sell for quite little and even go for free. Your iMac is worth more though because of the upgrade.
Incidentally, for collectors, now is the time to pick up G3 iMacs as they...
Wow, that's an excellent haul! It's always worth having a good scout around tips, (or recycling centres), as these days they can often hold computery treasures.
If the machine is for personal use then I would say that you're pretty much in the clear. Things like this are only really dodgy if you are using an install of an OS or other software for commercial purposes without having bought the software, since you are technically using unlicensed software...
The paperclip should work but if it doesn't and you're desperate to get the disk back then I would suggest getting a screwdriver out and taking the drive apart. Once you have the plastic case off it is very easy to get at the release lever which when pushed, should pop your disk back out.
Thanks for clarifying that. My experience in the field is basically putting a 6400 motherboard in a 5200, which worked perfectly. I assumed the 5200 was simply a 6200 in a difference case with a monitor built-in, though I'm guessing the power supply is going to be quite different from a 6200.
