9 IIci's and an LC that were left outside in the rain.

When I was at school there was a lot of old Mac software sitting in boxes in cupboards and drawers. Quite often it would gather dust and then get chucked out - fortunately I managed to save the vast majority of software before that happened to it. The school was always glad to give away their...

    Two conquests.

Nice finds - I always enjoyed having a raid through cupboards when I was at school, which is how I started my Mac collection. It is a good idea if you can to befriend the school technicians as they can often provide pointers to the location of interesting equipment and in some cases will grant...

    Really weird/crazy eBay Ad

When I saw the first picture I actually thought it was an LC with a real pizza box for a case. That has now given me an idea for my next project. ;)

Winter Warm Up 09 - Gavo's Pseudo Blog

That was a fun BBS, unfortunately I only had the chance to play with it for one evening until major work related obligations got in the way. I laughed when playing Microbandit when I got something like $45 and then was mugged! Muggings aside, it was a very generous bandit.

    Unhappy PowerBook 100

I initially tried charging the battery because it is in fact a third party battery (made by "Absolute") that looks more modern than the PowerBook itself. However, it is definitely dead. Exactly the same thing happens. I also tried holding down the programmer's and reset buttons with the power...

    Unhappy PowerBook 100

I picked up a PowerBook 100 on eBay the other day that was sold as "working fine months ago, but charger broke and hasn't been used since". Well I got it home, plugged in a 100 series charger, (one of the earlier low current ones), and tried powering it on. It does do something, but not what I...

WHY ARE ALL MY MACS FAILING

Sometimes cables, cards and SIMMs can become dislodged, which could cause problems. I've found that in 80 percent of cases when soemthing stops working, taking it apart and re-assembling it does the trick.

My 40/80/160 Mb SCSI Hard disk are all dying.

A few of my older SCSI drives have done this, started spinning up and then stopped. This unfortunately signals that the drive is dead and there's no real way to fix it. I would suggest going along the lines of looking for 50 to 68 pin adaptors and getting hold of some more modern 68 pin SCSI...

    RIP Macintosh IIci :( 1989-2009

My IIcx did exactly this shortly after I got it and a motherboard wash cleaned up the capacitor gunk and got it on it's feet again. It is still working after 2 years...

    Great Haul!

As far as I know the only cards made for the 1400's expansion slot were ethernet and video-out. If it is not an RJ45 ethernet port then it is almost certainly a PowerBook video port (you need an adaptor to connect it to an older Mac display or VGA monitor).

Compact Flash booting on PowerBook 500 series - need help!

Those of you who have been following my RetroChallenge blog will know that recently I have been trying to get my PowerBook 520c to boot from a Compact Flash card installed via a PCMCIA module. The PCMCIA module is a revision "B" Apple unit. I haven't been having much success with large, fast...

    Powerbook 500 with PowerPC

Although the SCSI Compact Flash adaptors are a good idea, the price is silly. The manufacturer would sell loads of them and probably make more money on the whole if they were to lower the price. Rant aside, there is another possible solution which I am currently investigating. There were...

    Powerbook 500 with PowerPC

I recently read something that desribed the introduction of the PowerBook 5300 and the negative impact it had, and that Apple produced the PPC upgrade for the 500 series as a response so users could have a well-built notebook with a PPC processor. The PPC 500 series was basically a stop-gap...

    More old Powerbooks

Those are good but the main problem lies in the price - they are too expensive for most people to justify buying. Many old Macs are aquired for free or very cheap so to spend £60 or £70 on drive adaptors doesn't seem right. It would be good if such adaptors fell to around a quarter of their...

    More old Powerbooks

Good show, I've heard that the screens on the 170s are amazing compared to the passive matrix displays of the early PowerBooks.

PMd. I try to keep my email under wraps as much as possible due to past experiences with spam.

    What the heck happened???

You can - there are adaptors available that can do this and they are generally very cheap. Try Googling or searching on eBay. Also, getting down to the obvious, it may be worth opening up the iBook and looking to see if the hard drive connector has partially popped out of the drive or...

    Performa 5400 startup chime?

Yes, I just checked and indeed it does. This must be an error in Mactracker, given the huge amount of information in the application I think it is forgivable! ;)
