Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Welcome! When I was at school a few years ago, the place also went through the same transition to the "Dark Side" and replaced numerous Macs with the black Dell Optiplexes. The foundations of my collection came from the school and I managed to save most of the good Macs and take them home. They...
Sounds like a good deal. The weak volume is a problem that plagues many SE/30s these days, it is due to degredation of the capacitors on the motherboard. Both of my SE/30s have this problem, one quite a bit more than the other. There are various threads on these forums discussing repairs for...
It may be worth re-setting the power manager. To quote this article, instructions are as follows:
"PowerBook 160, 165, or 180
1. Remove the AC adapter and the battery.
2. Let the PowerBook sit without power connected for 3 to 5 minutes.
3. Reinstall the battery and, if necessary, reconnect...
The video output of the 160 is on a daughtercard which also carries the RAM. My guess is that this daughtercard has been pulled just leaving only the motherboard, probably not a lot of use without the card.
Nice find! I really don't understand why people cut cables off electricals as it renders them immediately useless- it's very stupid. At least at a push you could somehow get new cables and wire them in yourself, but it would be quite labourious.
I cannibalised a number of those in a skip a couple of years ago for the memory and hard disks. The place where I was working back then had tons of them and the tower versions, but gradually they upgraded to the black 2x0 models. The ones they tossed out though were good as many had been...
IIGS RGB output works well on TVs if you connect it via SCART using a custom cable. I'm not sure if American TVs have SCART but it comes as standard with pretty much all modern European sets.
No idea about the mouse I'm afraid. The only ones I've ever used on Acorns have been Acorn-specific mice. I do have a feeling that there may be some way to re-map the mouse buttons but I can't remember how, either it was in a certain application or perhaps just the control panel. I'll have a...
Acorn A7000 - nice! I've got an A4000 and a RISC PC 600 and they are both great fun machines to play with. Check out http://www.acornarcade.com/ for some good games downloads. You will need a RISC OS application called "Sparkplug" to decompress Acorn Zip archives, it's floating about on the...
It is very cool. I also don't get the blue LEDs though, surely a green or red one would be more appropriate for a machine of that era... Although, absolutely everything electronic seems to feature blue LEDs these days, even my electric toothbrush has a blue LED on it bright enough to guide...
The asking price is ridiculous, though most of this seller's stuff seems to be listed with high prices. If I desperately wanted a multi-coloured 170 I would probably just buy a normal one and paint it.
The only time I've ever emailed about a Mac on Freecycle I got it - it was a Performa 630. There's rarely anything on our local Freecycle that I would be interested in.
I agree with Bunsen that an LC / Quadra series Mac would be pretty good for a mod. Using the existing CRT wouldn't be too much problem if you fancied a bit of wiring, the only thing is that it would limit you to monochrome (all the more retro-cool in my opinion).
Strangely I was thinking about the same thing a couple of nights ago.
Here are my observations:
520c : 2 seconds per blink
1400c : 1 spb
3400c : 1 spb
I do have a Duo 2300c as well but I assume it will be the same as yours.
I should maybe point out that mac-man6 has mentioned earlier in this thread that the Cinema display does actually work perfectly, it was the G4 it was connected to that has the problem. :)
It took me two years of struggling with the control strip to discover how to do this. I think it is listed somewhere amongst the Mac OS Help section, but I can't remember. Changing the screen resolution often has the effect of putting the Control Strip part way up the edge of the screen.
Presumably I am no. 0! I kind of picked this name when I joined the 68KMLA and since then I have just kind of kept it and used it for other things. On Flickr I'm MacMan475, since MacMan was already taken. The original inspiration was from the game "MacMan Classic", a version of PacMan for System 6.
