What can I do with my Nubus GPIB cards?

Canon used them to connect to some high end printers. I fondly remember one bubblejet printer which took one metre wide rolls of paper. It was used by a wallpaper manufacturer to print samples.

PM9600/200MP startup chime but no video or activity??

Go slowly. Install some known working RAM. Remove all PCI cards other than video. Reset CUDA. Go for a walk and make a cup of tea. And clean the plugs on the PSU, test them for volts without power demand.

    Low Density 6.0.x? 7.0.x?

System 6.0.x has been available for donkey's years from Apple via FTP/HTTP. At release time, it was available via boards and disk swaps, for the price of a disk. System 7.0.x -- ditto. System 7.1 changed the rules. You had to buy disks from a dealer, but multi-packs were available. System 7...

    System 7.1 Software?

No, it's fine. The first Scriptable Finder (7.5.x) is designed to work with System 7.1.x. Scriptable Finder shipped with loads of printer drivers, probably with a few other bundles. Juliet Elysa seems to have acquired it as part of a StyleWriter installation. It isn't unusual. Desktop...

Concerns about my collection hard drives.

Natural rubber (latex) under tension has a predictable failure pattern. Drive belts go ping, fall into the works and shrivel up. Little damage is caused and the belt can be replaced. In furniture or car seats, two inch wide straps degrade slowly (sag until your bottom hits the floor) and you can...

    Opening generic scsi enclousre

Apply some silicone lubricant (eg furniture polish) onto a small cotton wool bud and wipe it around the seams of the plastic case. Wipe it around where you expect the case to slide. Take care to put the lubricant into the joint rather than the outside of the case. Leave the case upside down for...

    Capturing screen video.

Not great, more proof of concept. It looks as bad as some of my own experiments at displaying a Mac or Windows desktop on a TV. More or less quoting a report I wrote in the early 2000s: "Anyone who thinks that this is acceptable should book an appointment at Specsavers." Some people managed to...

    Centris 610 won't boot...

Stuck and dusty switches usually cause reboots, but it's worth a look. I'd try a RAM SIMM swap (not much that you can do with soldered RAM) and always unplug the floppy drive.

    System 7.1 Software?

If you are looking at really old Mac software, you have to understand PackIt archives. For a decade later, think about Base64 encoding and MIME. But mostly Stuffit.

5 boards to have a crack at

If you think that they are weird, don't touch with a soldering iron. Just write about the boards as they are.

    System 7.1 Software?

Oh, and install something like PC Exchange and the unpackers on your PowerBook asap. Once you have them, you can take floppy disks straight from Windows 7 and install apps on your vintage Mac. If you have courage and time, have a go at AppleShare exchanges or FTP to transfer to 68K Macs...

    Capturing screen video.

I find this an interesting exercise. I think it can be implemented easily using cheap PC/Windows kit (10 years old) as a capture device for the PowerMac. But I'm more adventurous; I'd like more ideas about how you would perform the capture using contemporary (ie pre- or early-OS X) Mac kit...

    System 7.1 Software?

Somehow, you need to perform some magic. Over the air and magically, you need to install a utility (eg PC Exchange) which will read DOS/FAT formatted floppy disks on the PowerBook. Or maybe somebody local can supply a copy on disk.  You could try a utility such as MacDrive on the Windows 7 PC...

    Centris 610 won't boot...

Shouldn't the PSU fan kick off briefly when power is applied? Put a piece of paper into the blades from underneath to see if the fan works. Monitor: Which monitor? What happens when the monitor is disconnected?

    Macintosh Portable

Trickle charge the original lead acid battery. 30 minutes on charge, 30 minutes off. Use a meter to check voltage across the poles to see if it is charging. Repeat for six hours. Is the battery recovering? Is it taking a charge? I think I wrote about this years ago on 68KMLA, so try a search.

    Asante MacCon problem with SE/30

Thanks for the feedback, rickrob. You are connecting to a Farallon Starnet hub. Are you connecting to the internet beyond, or are you just using a private network? As you say, it is too late to experiment much further. The Network Software Selector, as I recall, requires a reboot and is a bit...

    Asante MacCon problem with SE/30

The Network Software Installer (NSI) disk should fix that more easily. It'll provide the latest versions of Appletalk and EtherTalk (ie LocalTalk and Ethernet drivers), on which to install the vendor driver if it is not present. Always install the vendor driver; the Apple driver is generic and...

How do I use a etherport se?

What is your home network? If you can run thinwire, flip the switch on the Etherport SE towards the BNC port and plug in. If your home network works with 10mbps utp, you need an AUI transceiver which plugs into the 15 pin connector -- with a bayonet fastening. Most transceivers will work...

How do I use a etherport se?

Well done. You've bought one of the first Ethernet cards for the Mac. What does the card look like -- and the bit which replaced a blanking plate? Are there any switches or DIP switches on the card? I have documentation for this card, but I'm not sure whether there were different versions

Who Remembers a Generic Printer Driver Under System 6 or Before?

The MS device for compact Macs was called the MacEnhancer. It was later sold by Phoenix, the company responsible for many PC BIOS implementations. After struggling in the wrong room, I found my boxed Orange Micro Grappler 9-pin adapter. As NJRoadfan notes, it comprises a serial to parallel...
