    CD Burner for my quadra?

Ayup, external SCSI ones work fine with toast, I've used a couple. A Quadra 950 I used with a LaCie one had no problems burning at 8x. Dana

    MacOS 8.6 on "Sawtooth" G4

AFAIK, that's a version unique to the sawtooths, which came out after 8.6 was released & needed an updated 8.6. They run terrifically well with it (My mother's G4/500 is a strangely zippy beast with it, and I think I'll take it back to 8.6 if she ever upgrades to another machine) Dana

And I hear they run OSX. ;) Good catch! Dana

    6400-->6500 mobo

I put a 6500 board into my mother's 6400, as the sound was dodgy on the 6400 with the G3/400 upgrade. The 6500 *and* G3 together worked just fine, too. Dana

    Transplanting Hard Disk Platters?

What tomlee59 said above. I opened a 40MB one, planted it in a Quadra 605, and installed 7.1 just to watch it working away. A full OS install and some app installs later, I put the lid back on, and left the drive - it still worked OK a few years later. I have no idea how careful you'd need to...

Apple switching back to PowerPC CPUs

The Forbes blurb (usual waffle from a non-technical source, alas) doesn't, but the dual core, 2GHz 64-bit 13W SoC they did end up creating does. It's real hardware - with real products using those SoCs. ( and this has to be one of the coolest looking pieces of PPC hardware I've seen :) ) (And...

Apple switching back to PowerPC CPUs

Alright, that's a bit of a lie, but they *are* buying PPC designer, PA Semi. http://www.forbes.com/technology/2008/04/23/apple-buys-pasemi-tech-ebiz-cz_eb_0422apple.html Dana

    Quadra 605 board Mod.

The old forums has this post - http://68kmla.org/forums/archive/topic.asp%3FTOPIC_ID=2360.html - when I found a site with info on adding two more simm slots in the little Q605. From memory, the fellow who did that one had a bit more than 256MB in, and was aiming for more. Alas, the original...

    GNUstep on *nix/68k

Aye. I think. If you mean the windowmaker stuff + mail.app etc on Debian, on a Quadra 605 - yeah. sluggish, but worked. Dana

Control strip in a Weird place...

hold either option or command and drag the little triangular-ish tab on the end of the control strip up/down or left/right to change its position. Dana

What is your mouse of choice?

A normal mouse here - an apple mighty mouse. Trackballs make my fingers/thumbs/wrist lock up in pain after a little use, without me noticing until it's too late. Dana

    G3 powerbook wifi question.

on my Wallstreet, I have a MacSense AeroCard Plus. Works in MacOS9 and Mac OS X with MacSense's own drivers, and the fellow who sent it to me had it working on the WS with Linux, too. That's about everything covered! Its model number is WPE-700, too. Dana

    My new favourite 68k

http://www.danamania.com/tmp/lapisvideo.jpg http://www.danamania.com/tmp/lapis.jpg One o' them. No drivers, alas - the other Lapis drivers online and that people have sent me don't detect it, but it does give nice resolutions with loads of colours, and isn't terribly sluggish without...

    Restoring Quadra 630

I tried another 128MB which caused chimes of death, as did two different 32MB ones - the 16MB was the largest I could get it to boot with, in the 2nd slot. (single banked slot, not single sided, too) Dana

Was the "Beige G3" Actually Beige?

Mine are no more or no less beige/platinum than any other macs I have. My G3MT is quite certainly platinum, the G3DT is a little yellowed (but less than some other platinum boxes), and my 7300 is REALLY positively beige - yellowing again. On the inside, it's Platinum though. Dana

    My new favourite 68k

Just throwing a few things around, while I had a Q630 out and playing, and I think I found my new favourite 68k :) . A 630 with 630DOS logic board, overclocked (40MHz) full 040, comm slot ethernet, Lapis 3MB LCPDS video card for dual monitors, 148MB RAM, 10GB HD and SCSI CDR, running 8.1...

    Weird Monitor Problem

My iMac has one of those, a little fine dot inside the screen. It's either some crud that was inside the tube when it was built that's decided to stick somewhere, a manufacturing defect in the mask, a manufacturing defect in the phosphor triads, or something similar along those lines. And...

Anyone run linux on Virtual PC?

I ran debian on Virtual PC, on a 1GHz eMac. It showed me how damned good Virtual PC was for emulating everything but graphics - and it's impressively good. Benchmarkwise, it came out around the speed of an 800MHz PIII, and handled serving danamania.com and danaquarium.com for a little while in a...

    iCab is Back.

Aye, looks like webkit - when executed, iCab loads /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework That, and the iCab browser itself is 2MB. Not to take anything away from iCab itself though - the rendering engine is one thing, how it handles throwing around pages via tabs/bookmarks/content...
