    Sega Dreamcast

Dreamcast is a wonderful console for tinkerers... you'll love it! My roomate has one and reads all the news pages and forums; there's a very active user community online.

Largest hard drive in a 630?

Actually, a 40GB WD Caviar might be a good choice. The added spindle speed doesn't go to waste at all... I've got benchmarks showing a Mac Classic booting faster from a drive with a lower seek time! You're totally right about saturating the low transfer rate of the controller, but the seek time...

Ultra ATA Connector Part Numbers? No Really, It's On Topic.

Sounds like you're talking about exactly what I wanted to do to fit the Spectrum 8/24 PDQsi into the SE/30... Good luck, Jeff!

Quadra 650 + ATTO SiliconExpress IV (SEIV) = no worky?

That's wonderful news. I assume you downloaded the 2.1rc2 from my site... I'll update the page with that info.

Got some apple design powered speakers

The AppleDesign Powered Speakers are *great*. They've got some bad rolloff above about 10k but that's because Macs at the time could only play back 22KHz samples, so anything higher than that coming from a Mac would have just been noise you wanted to filter out anyway. I used mine at work...

Daystar IIsi/SE/30 Adapter, $150 on Ebay!!?

In short, the blower is just glued onto the side of the heatsink; I glued it after the heatsink was glued to the 68040, but there's no reason it couldn't have been done the other way around. This setup has evolved over time; here's the story of the cooling solutions my Turbo040 has used...

Daystar IIsi/SE/30 Adapter, $150 on Ebay!!?

I was getting hangs during INIT loading with the IIfx SIMM; they'd go away if I'd take out half my control panels then put them back in over the course of a few reboots. Eventually I'd get it running on full extensions, IIfx SIMM, and Turbo040, but it took a lot of reboots to get there. I'm...

Daystar IIsi/SE/30 Adapter, $150 on Ebay!!?

Just to clarify, my SE/30 with Turbo040 and IIfx ROM SIMM reports Gestalt ID 9, which is the normal SE/30 Gestalt. My Turbo040 has 4.01 ROM. I'm having terrible stability problems running 7.5.5 with IIfx ROM. (I don't care because I'm reverting to stock ROM right now, but wanted to mention it.)

Daystar IIsi/SE/30 Adapter, $150 on Ebay!!?

My impression was that the reason the IIfx and IIsi ROMs worked in the SE/30 was that they were "universal" ROMs with drivers for every device in every (modular) Mac ever made up to the date of their manufacture. With that in mind, the natural assumption would be that the toolbox routine that...

Daystar IIsi/SE/30 Adapter, $150 on Ebay!!?

JDW: Last night I tested the floppy drive with this configuration: SE/30 (80MB RAM) IIsi adaptor Turbo040 (later ASIC version) (4.11 ROM IIRC but I can TattleTech it if needs be) (40MHz 68040 @ 48MHz overclock) Asante MacCon si IIfx ROM SIMM 7.5.5 External 1.44MB floppy (upgraded external...

Daystar IIsi/SE/30 Adapter, $150 on Ebay!!?

Oh yeah, stupid question JDW: Do you still have the same floppy drive problems with a DayStar adaptor (either IIsi or SE/30) as with the TwinSpark? Also, I've got a IIfx ROM SIMM now... I should try and see if my (external) floppy drive works with the Turbo040, IIsi adaptor, and IIfx ROM SIMM...

    Takky Motherboard Choice

I'm not quite sure where to go with my Takky... so here's the story. A few years ago, when my wife and I first began dating, she rented a room in a larger house, had no computer, and had no room for one. Consequently, I built her a 6500/225 based Takky with all the works: 128MB RAM, 12GB hard...

    Dream peripherals (the return)

It wouldn't be hard at all to make an IDE or even SATA NuBus card... ACARD makes SCSI-IDE and SCSI-SATA chips that support more than one device. Take a blank NuBus card, throw together the easiest 53c80 SCSI card possible, hotwire it to the ACARD SCSI-IDE chip, and break it out into two IDE or...

    SCSI DVD-RAM/ROM and SCSI Zip

DVD-RAM *rocks* on old Macs; I use mine to back up my SE/30 and I <3 it so much. You'll need DVD-RAM TuneUP to make it work as removable media. "It's available if you look."

Multiple compacts on one hard drive

The big issue is just to make sure you don't both try to write to the same file at the same time, right?

    Linux/BSD on a NuBus Mac

Linux on the NuBus PowerPC macs isn't as bad as it could be, but it's not for the faint of heart. Talk to the listserv and read as much as you can, then have fun. Any PowerPC linux distro will work on the NuBus Macs, but none of them will support it out-of-the-box. The basic procedure goes like...

Mac SE with a weird PDS card

My LC stopped powering up a while ago due to the clicking PSU. I was in a hurry to test some things and was a bit annoyed 'cuz I didn't have another LC to use. So, I ripped open the PSU to see what I could see. Lo, and behold: the caps in the PSU had leaked goo all over inside it. I gave it the...

From The Mail and Value Village

And it's a darn shame, too. We only call it "good" performance because it's all relative and we don't have any good cards for PCI PowerMacs. At least they're really cheap to flash. :-D
